what type of therapy are you having?

Postby pancakes » Sun Apr 24, 2011 11:16 am

I'm curious as to what type of therapy your psychologists/doctors have recommended to you, and whether it has been of benefit?

I've been to two therapists, one for a couple of sessions, another for just one. I got the impression that AvPD, or at least the symptoms of it, are something that just are what they are, and that the only way to get over it is to just try and do stuff that pushes your boundaries.
Yes, it is possible to be this good looking and not have a girlfriend ;)

I am currently doing DBT, but who knows, I could be a touch bipolar. It would explain how suddenly I have the energy to do things. Then again, that might just be a short reprieve in my depression, and that's what normal is like, I've just had it for such a short amount of my life I don't recognize it.

Regular talk therapy did wonders for me. That I definitely recommend for anyone with AvPD.

I just talk about things with my psychologist. Just talk therapy seems to be helping me out. Should I know what all these acronyms and such mean? :?

Hello pancakes7 (from one pancake to another...) lol

CBT is cognitive behavior therapy.
Alot of therapists incorporate it into the talk therapy (supportive psychotherapy) that they do, so you may not even be realizing that you are receiving a dynamic type of CBT.

So for example, with a client who has AvPD, the therapist may provide encouragement (supportive psychotherapy) when just chatting about how things are in your life, your issues etc. But also when you say things like "I am a failure" or "nobody would want me", they may get you to challenge those thoughts by getting you to look at the good things you have got going for you, and that you're not a complete failure. This is the cognitive part of CBT- i.e they challenge your thoughts/cognitions. The behavior component of CBT is when they suggest to you to try a task that might challenge your behaviours- i.e situations that you avoid, for example going out and saying hello to a stranger.

I think many therapists incorporate CBT as part of their psychotherapy.

For anxiety, mindfulness techniques are also useful.

Have you ever been diagnosed with borderline traits/ BPD, or with post traumatic stress disorder or an eating disorder? These are the most common conditions to recommend DBT. Though if you are having problems regulating your mood in general, that could be another reason to recommend DBT. Did you do CBT beforehand, or were you put straight into a DBT group? Sorry for all the personal questions- if you prefer, PM me. I am really interested in how DBT can work for AvPD, as it is not often utilised for AvPD, unless there are comorbid conditions, or CBT has failed.

Also that sounds exactly right. He tells me I need to change my thoughts and not think negative things basically. He even specifically talked about saying hello to a stranger in fact haha. So I guess I have been getting CBT without realizing it.

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new and I know I'm not an expert in mindfulness or meditation but I would like to ask if whether there truly is just one standard of wisdom in life that is applicable to all men. If so, then how are we human beings able to come upon it? are we able to channel the supreme beings from meditation that we acquire superhuman knowledge? just a thought.
