Accepted to a study with 10 day hospital stay

Postby Parador » Sun Feb 07, 2010 8:31 am

They are doing a study at a hospital where they give you a bacterial illness that will make you sick a s a dog and give you diarrhea. It requires rwo 10 day hospital stays and several outpatient visits. But it will pay over $4000. So i signed up. They accepted me. I asked ane they said they would not let me out of the hospital for ANY reason while I am infected. I think that is the worst part - knowing there is no way I can leave for 10 days. And I will be really sick. I have until Friday to decide whether to do it. Sound like fun to you guys?

Woah that's pretty crazy. How bad exactly is the disease, other than the bad diarrhea part? I might do that for $4000 if they had wireless internet in the hospital.

I tried to get into some drug studies that pay $1000 to $5000 (depending on the amount of time you spend in the study), and which you can repeat every other month. My roommate referred me to these studies, for which he pays for a significant portion of his college. I drove 80 miles to get screened and got disqualified because I said I had been on medication during one point of my life; I guess I figured that because of the fact that I had been off medication for over a year that it wouldn't be a problem (although obviously it was silly of me, they ask the questions to disqualify people). Anyway, I had to get a waiver from a psychiatrist if I wanted to get in the study; I went to the VA psychiatrist, who I had not seen in over a year, and who decided not to help and stated in a letter I asked him to write (a letter in which I hoped he would state that I had been off of medication successfully for over a year) that I have schizoid personality traits and have anxiety NOS, and that I went off the medication on my own accord, with the doctor not being aware of it. Next, instead of getting on the bandwagon to help me with my personality disorder, he scheduled my next appointment for 2 months in the future. Thank you doctor.

I already have another appointment scheduled, and hope the psych doctor will give me a clean slate of health so that I can try to get in the studies. I tried to convey to him that I needed some form of income and have had serious problems getting a job since I got out of the military, but maybe I wasn't quite clear enough on that.

They do have wi-fi. But I don't even need it - I have a netbook with verizon connection. There is a very slight chance the disease could give me arthritis or paralyze me.

Fine with me.

I told them I had some anxiety issues, but I am not on any meds for it. I said I just treat it with exercise. They said they had a tradmill and bike to ride.

They seem to be studying whether exposeure to a bacteria will give you immunity if you are exposed again. So I would go into the hospital for 10 days in march and then 10 more in June when they infect me again. I should not get as sick in the second exposure. I hope. But I told them how I got mumps and chicken pox twice. I just have the worst luck - always have.

I know of a study in which some students did a trial and I believe one died and the others ended up with gangerene and losing limbs.

or paralyze me

Parador? Don't.

Can't you sell your sperm or a kidney or something? Neither one is comfortable but neither does either result in paralysis. Or death. And as bad as death is, paralysis would be worse.

Just buy a loto ticket and take a walk on your working, functional, helpful legs.
