Hi everybody, I need to ask you something. Is there any doctor who suffers from AvPD here? I'm asking that because I'm studying to be a doctor (I'm not sure yet but I'm thinking about geriatrics or psychiatry) and I'm so so afraid I won't be able to succeed in my profession because of my AvPD. It would help me a lot to know that there are other people who have the same problem I do and could succeed on medical profession. Another thing...do you think it's pathetic for me to consider being a psychiatrist? I mean, shoudn't psychiatrists be healthier than their patients? Can someone with AvPD help other people? Please, I need some advice.

There was a woman on the old MSN site who was studying to be a doctor. I chatted with her a bit, but then she stopped responding. I honestly don't know how anyone with avpd could become a doctor. I barely got through to get a bachelor's. If I were going to be a doc I would be a podiatrist. You aren't going to have people in life or death situations. But psychiatry would be fine too. I think doctors are better able to help people when they have some first hand experience with the problems they are treating.
Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

Fight for your dreams. Study whatever you love. You´ll feel that you weren´t wanting your time.

I've been thinking about it, and I guess there's really nothing that can prevent me from being a successful doctor. After all, as avoidants we fear intimacy and rejection, and as a doctor I won't have to expose my intimacy to any of my pacients, it's a professional relationship, doesn't have to be personal. It's like any other profession I guess. Even as a psychiatrist I would have no trouble cause I would be talking about my pacient's lives, not my own.But thanks for the comments
