L Carnitine is an amino acid. It is not one of the essential ones since your body can make it out of other amino acids. Your body will convert it into acetyl L Carnitine. It's just L Carnitine with an acetyl group attached. The acetyl group is a very simple organic group with the formula CH3CO. Just attach a hydrogen atom to the acetyl group and you have acetic acid - CH3COO-H. That's what's in vinegar.

Wow, that was a blast from the past... ...acetyl groups, acetic acid, amino acids... ...that's my kind of area. Acetic acid is made using bacteria in some industries, in what is know as a 'trickle filter'. i cannot remember the name of the specific bacterum though. One of my favourite molecules is n-acetylglucosamine, purely because of it's name. The longer the name, the more I'll like it. Another cool one is phosphatidylinositol, which is a lipid-based compound.

What about the chelating agent EDTA? It's full name is ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It's used in lots of things.

Acetyl-L-carnitine is the better option because it has dual benefits: The acetyl group from the molecule is used to create acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter), while the L-carnitine is believed to be involved in the production of energy (by being involved in oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria in cells).

I take any brain boosting supplement I can find. I do the acetyl L Carnetine ,fish oils, alpha lipoic acid, ginko, and choline. I would take phosphatidylserine, but it is very expensive.
