New start

Postby Bright eyes » Mon Sep 14, 2009 9:19 pm

Hey guys.
My last day of work tomorrow.
I start uni on Monday (again).
I'm hoping I can stick at it this time and I won't let my anxiety get the better of me.
I swear I'm the most self conscience/paranoid man in the world sometimes.

I was just wondering if you could give me some kind words or some advice.

Cirvante = :evil: Tsk, tsk!

Best of luck, Bright eyes! School anxiety is horrible--I'm dealing with it a lot lately, too. I have nightmares about school every night. Be patient with yourself as you make this transition. Don't judge anything based on how the first day goes... unless your first day back is awesome. From what I recall reading in another thread, you're in a better position to have a much better experience this time. What are you doing to distract yourself before school starts? How are you going to reward yourself for making it through the first day?

Instead of worrying about how/whether you'll make it all the way this time, try to think about making it through one day first, then another, then a full week, etc.

In class, I tend to blend note-taking with introspection/reflection, going back and forth depending on whether I find the specific topic in the material interesting. It's been rather helpful to me. Not all of the ideas I come up with are that great, but some are, which is nice. If you're paying attention, your mind should be working at a high level, so take advantage of that. I don't know what the style of your classes are, or whether you're like me - where taking notes is generally useless or incomprehensible to others since I'll remember things visually ten times better than jotting down what was said - but hopefully you can adapt that to fit your needs. I hope that helps lol

You have some days before uni, so what Terra says is a wonderful advise. Try to keep your thoughts about the uni appart. If you are too anxious or can´t sleep, do the breathing exercises and relaxation. I promise that help a lot.

Try to look for information in the following link:

Best of wishes, Bright Eyes!

Bright Eyes I've dealt with school anxiety, and anxiety in general.
There is a lot that can be done to help you with it so you try not to avoid it.

There are different types of coping skill you can try to do (but in order for them to work you need to do them all the time) like exposure therapy, exposing yourself to the things that make you anxious and take small steps to get over the fear.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, great for anyone who suffers anxiety and really any other disorder.

Positive self talk, that's the only thing that has helped me out of becoming anxious in the last year or so....

Anxiety sucks if you'd like more information i'd be happy to send some stuff your way.

Oh and take care not to isolate yourself too much before school begins. One of the reasons I always have a hard time going back to school is because I spend too much time in my own head in the days before school starts. I don't know how it is for you but when I don't practice my social skills, I lose them and then I never have them when I need them. Push yourself to leave your comfort zone before school starts. It's similar to how people should stretch before they run to avoid getting injured.

Who would want to go to a party full of sulking people? Wait, who would want to go to a party in the first place? I think you get where I'm going with this ... :P

Edit: Oh, by the way ...
