How do you dress?

Postby Ghost1991 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 2:20 am

In terms of appearance, íf ít ís affected at all by APD, ít will tend to be affected ín one of 3 ways. 1st, avoidants may put considerable time & effort into making themselves attractive to others. The idea behind this ís, at least they will be liked for their looks, íf not for themselves. 2nd, they may consciously, or unconsciously, ensure that their appearance drives others away. This provides them with some control over their lives. Rather than waiting helplessly to be rejected, they ensure rejection from the start by their own actions

I was just curious, after reading this I have realized that I dress to drive other people away before I drive them away before they can reject me.

Im adding another option to the poll that wasn't mentioned in the quote, dressing to blend in so they don't draw attention to themselves.
Pink ribbon scars that never forget, I tried so hard to cleanse these regrets...

I wear black most of the time...And the clothes are of a style pertaining to my own personal tastes, and what I feel comfortable with. I've never followed trends. It's a delicate balance for me; I don't want to draw attention to myself because I can't bare that attention being used to objectify me for all my flaws, and I don't want to dress particularly unappealing, because I do not want to add to my flaws. I guess I do kind of blend in...Jeans, plain shirts, shorts, sometimes blouses. No loud or noticeable patterns. Sneakers mainly, rarely shoes. Never wear skirts or dresses. I don't feel as if I'm being 'true' to myself when I do. I guess I'm kind of androgynous. But on the other hand, guys tend to more often than not be attracted to feminine women, so I guess it helps there. I feel as if I've been taken out of my comfort zone when guys approach me in that way

I used to dress in really bland, dull clothes. I didn't really care at the time, so long as I didn't look like a complete slob and the clothes were comfortable. Within the past year, I've overhauled my closet in an attempt to look more presentable and perhaps give me more confidence. I think dressing to look more attractive and dressing to blend in, in my case, was essentially the same thing. I wanted to look a lot nicer than I had before, but I wasn't expecting that to do any wonders for me with meeting other people.

To blend in, but mostly dark colours.

To make myself look better than i feel, but also nothing too garish or anything that will get me noticed. I have a real thing about what I wear, I cannot go out if I don't feel that I look okay, because I panic and end up hysterical. Fortunately I stay indoors 99% of the time, and live in pajamas.

I dress with as many layers as possible, and not with much intent in mind, although I wouldn't say I ever dress to blend in nor to be scary, so attractive is what I chose.

All three of those options in one, really. I dress to look attractive but also to fit in and look like the typical college party boy (collared shirts, basketball shorts, jeans)... but also to look a bit intimidating (like the reserved, mysteriously cool kid lol) so others won't try to mess with me or give me a hard time. What I wear is comfortable and also feels like "me" so it's not like I'm trying to dress like someone I'm not. Whether I act like someone I'm not is another story, unless someone approaches me in a nonthreatening manner then I'm pretty friendly.
