I can hardly tolerate anyone. That's the whole point. That's why I avoid people. If that weren't the case, I wouldn't avoid people and I wouldn't have a problem. I wouldn't be here.

Yeah, what Zahara said...it sounds like you're taking the term "avoidant" a little too literally. You can avoid people because you don't like them and still be the furthest thing possible from AvPD. It sounds like you're just a misanthropist. (Unless you really long for connection to other human beings but you've become hardened from rejection...a lot of members on this board say stuff like that.)

I don't think I'm a misanthrope. I can't hate people unless they've wronged me or someone else... as in the coercion thing. Even then, it's usually just disdain that I feel. Things like 'hatred' and 'misanthropy' are thrown around a bit too readily, I think. Genuine hatred is pretty intense. I don't think many people could genuinely hate everyone without exhausting themselves fairly quickly.

I don't know. A better way to word my problem might be an inability to tolerate the presence of other people... rather than the people themselves? I still think I'm intolerant.

Asuka wrote:Nightspore, would you say then that you have an intolerance to human contact rather than a hatred of humans? To me, that sounds like an active rather than passive form of AvPD.

Unless hatred is something other than the horrible, gut wrenching feeling you get when you want to brutally murder people and have their seed wiped from the face of the earth, I'll venture the intolerance to contact is about right.

Maybe that's not intolerance as most people see it, but if this were put in the context of yellow people, bisexuals, foreigners or what have you, as opposed to a general intolerance for human contact, it would be decried up and down by anyone with half a brain as bigotry... or at least prejudice, since "bigotry" implies self superiority, which I lack. And really, that would be correct. This is prejudice on my part.

prej u dice
1a. An adverse judgement or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts.
1b. A preconceived preference or idea.
2. The act or state of holding unreasonable preconceived judgements or convictions. See Synonyms at predilection.
3. Irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race, or religion.

Minus the "hatred," those definitions sound about right. So, I'm definitely intolerant. Gods of Hell, I suck.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "active" and "passive" forms of AvPD... I can't comprehend how someone could actively, intentionally cripple themselves this way.

I am intolerant of intolerant people, but I'm not sure if they can be considered a minority ;)

I'm often unassuming of people, until they do something to hurt or annoy me.

Sometimes I'll go on the defensive if they've hurt a friend/friends of mine. But not really if they've annoyed other people, because everybody annoys somebody at some point, intentional or not.

I voted "yes", as in "yes, I am tolerant of other social minorities". I think this is accurate.
