Ironically enough, dentists have some of the highest suicide rates of any profession.

Ever hear of the British man with the world's worst known case of amnesia? I've seen him on some show on the Discovery Channel about our perception of time. The guy's short-term memory lasts less than 30 seconds, and he constantly thinks that he just woke up after years in a coma (since his accident that left him the way he is). Seems like a hell of a life to me.

Is it the patient H.M.? Is he still alive?
I learned about his case in psychology classes. He's been quite a blessing for the science of memory. There's probably no other person who has taken part in so many research study as this poor guy and he doesn't even remember.
The new thing they found out through him is that conscious and nonconscious memory are independent. H.M. was still able to learn new things. I think they tought him typewriting with 10 fingers after his injury. When you asked him if he could typewrite he would say not but if you let him try he was perfect.
If I remember it correctly, they removed great parts of his hippocampus and other medial brain structures because he had epilepsy. The epilepsy was cured after the operation and he gained some IQ points, but his short term memory was gone.

I would prefer to loose long term memory if I could choose.

I remembered his name after a little searching. Here's a brief Wikipedia article on him.

Just to chime in on OP's question... no. I've asked myself once of twice whether I could pull a trigger, or cut my own throat, and answered yes. But I've never in those moments felt any real desire to do so. No matter how lonely or empty life feels, I realize that the only result of my (senseless) death would be suffering on the part of the people I don't want to hurt, and a failed opportunity on my part to make it through this #######4.

I guess responsibility to the few people who do want me around is a stronger motivator than the measly emptiness in me. Sometimes it's hard to count family as SOs, because they're almost required to love you, but on the same coin, who could count more?

EDITs:

Im pretty sure my death will be suicide.

Me too....Would'nt it be great to have amnesia?

Why's that?

Losing your memories.

I would have said "losing your baggage" :D

That's the 3rd or 4th time I've seen a statement like that recently... I've gotta ask, have you really thought that through? Do all folks with suicidal thoughts believe it all fades to black after death? I'm not exactly a religious person, but frankly, maybe the greatest detractor is that "what if"... what if my consciousness IS around after death? Could I really (after)live with myself, having thrown away the opportunity to defeat my demons?

I've never attempted suicide (because I don't have the balls to), but I've been thinking of suicide for the past 4 or 5 years, and especially in the last year or two. My main reason is because I just have no future. I can't find any pleasure in the life I have right now (in college, struggling to pass classes, no friends). And if I were to graduate, I doubt I'll get a decent job, and there just seems to be nothing to look forward to. I don't see a purpose in existing. Nobody wants me, and I don't feel useful at all.

I kew a guy just like that in the psych hospital. He couldn't even remember stuff for 30 seconds. He would ask where he was and you'd tell him and then he'd ask again. You had to keep telling him over and over though or he'd have a fit. The staff made a tape for him to listen to, but he'd ask the taped voice what his name was and have a fit when it didn't answer.

On topic - it would be pretty easy with a gun I think. I would have to take out three dentists first though. But I'm not sure I would have time to hit all three offices before the cops caught up with me. I don't own a gun so it's all safe. Just a pleasant thought.

Does hanging yourself hurt do you think? I mean is it like being choked, and you're gasping for air, or is it pretty peaceful and you just slip into sleep.

Not that I'm thinking about killing myself or anything right now, I'm just curious.
