Professions?

Postby ABlindManAndHisElephant » Sat Oct 04, 2008 7:24 am

I've read in several places that Avoidants often try to find jobs that involve little or no personal contact and interaction with the rest of society, but I can't think of very many professions that would allow for that (save your typical work-at-home jobs).

I won't ask what jobs any of you actually have, because that might be revealing too much information for some, but I was just wondering what careers/jobs Avoidants tend to go for (if you can think of any)?
Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.

I'm planning to become a scientist. I don't have problems interacting with others as long as it doesn't get personal. I hate having to do part-time jobs as long as I'm a student.

I am a network admin for a medium size bank, get to stay in my area, and dont have to deal to much with other people. Of course unless we have any problems, so it works for me, and i enjoy working with computers.

Machinists and long haul truck drivers, are the first things that come to mind. Both pay good money but you gotta have proper training.

I guess depending on what you're definition of profession, there might be a few. You could be a professional hermit who makes his/her money buying/selling stocks, but you probably won't make much money, or just buy and sell things online. There are also those street performers who stand perfectly still while people try and make them move and give them money, not sure if that qualifies since its still around people, but there is no interaction (When I was about 4 years old I got one of those guys to move; the trick is to reach into their money bucket.) That is all I can think of right now, I am sure some equally silly ideas will come to me later.

Ugg, my parents are suggesting the exact same thing to me. While it is comforting to know that they have no idea I have, for lack of better words, a fear of phones, it is annoying to have to find ways to thwart their attempts with logical reasons when the reason is entirely illogical.

I'm an English teacher (or TEFL teacher i should say) and here in England I'm trying to get into teaching at a primary school. it might seem weird that i wanted to be a teacher - a profession that is all about interacting with other people - but first of all, i never planned to be a teacher, i wanted to be a translator. secondly, at the teacher training college i ended up at i avoided any work with adults or teenagers, i opted to work with children because i found it all so much easier, i'm ok with children and enjoy working with them. Throughout my studies i worked as a private English tutor and i have to say that such one-to-one conditions and my successes helped me a lot with confidence and i know when i start teacher training in England, it will be stressful etc. but i will be ok.

i worked at a call center in Slovakia for a month too, i hated it (but it was only a summer job and i knew it would soon be over) but it helped me a bit with phones. I have an incredible phone phobia still though!

I work for a nonprofit organization that publishes a major scientific magazine. My jobs is make articles and ads look pretty and upload them to the web.

Most contact is through email and IM. Thankfully phone calls and contact with the public are minimal or else I'd go insane. I put in more than my fair share of time with customer service jobs and refuse to that again, since my faith in humanity is already hanging by a thread.

I worked in a factory last summer. It was hard work, but I enjoyed it. I was too busy to stop and chat, so I had an excuse not to talk to anybody.
