I would list a lot of stuff from The Who. By no means is any of it specific to AVPD and some I would list isn't even specific to mental illnesses or whatever, but some of it is and the other stuff for whatever reason I relate to.

I'm not even a big "lyrics" person, I care about musical quality. But my #1 album is Quadrophenia and excellent quality wise, but also has so many songs I relate to.

- The Real Me (pretty much full of things I and many other AVPD's can relate to, from dealing with a "doctor" or psychologist/phsyciatrist to "the real me" which is a big AVPD thing, "the girl I used to love" ending with "she doesn't want to know me now" people and relationships that are in the past)

- Cut my Hair (bits and pieces, but this one always gets me:

"Why do I have to be different to them?
Just to earn the respect of a dance hall friend,
We have the same old row, again and again.
Why do I have to move with a crowd
Of kids that hardly notice I'm around,
I have to work myself to death just to fit in.")

- I'm One (one of the big ones that is so easy for avoidants to relate to right down to the title. I could pick the parts but easier to list the entire lyrics:

"Every year is the same
And I feel it again,
I'm a loser - no chance to win.
Leaves start falling,
Come down is calling,
Loneliness starts sinking in.

But I'm one.
I am one.
And I can see
That this is me,
And I will be,
You'll all see
I'm the one.

Where do you get
Those blue blue jeans?
Faded patched secret so tight.
Where do you get
That walk oh so lean?
Your shoes and your shirts
All just right.
But I'm one etc.

I got a Gibson
Without a case
But I can't get that even tanned look on my face.
Ill fitting clothes
I blend in the crowd,
Fingers so clumsy
Voice too loud.

But I'm one.")

- The Dirty Jobs (one that I perhaps interpret different than it's intention, but whatever. "I'm getting put down, I'm getting pushed round, I'm being beaten every day." and this is one just with being taken advantage of from people "My karma tells me You've been screwed again. If you let them do it to you You've got yourself to blame. It's you who feels the pain It's you that feels ashamed."

- Is It in my Head ("I walk, and people turn and laugh." what do people say and think of us when we aren't there? The the line "is it in my head".
"I pick up phones and hear my history.
I dream of all the calls I miss.
I try to number those who love me,")

- I've Had Enough (not AVPD related but definitely have felt this way quite a lot of times "I've had enough of living, dying, smiling, crying, etc." and then a fantastic ending line "I've had enough of trying to love.")

-Dr. Jimmy (not really anything on the second side that has a lot of specific lines like side 1 of Quad does related to AVPD but a few tracks like "Sea and Sand" and "Drowned" just feel like it, Dr. Jimmy doesn't really either despite it being the track where in the story of Quadrophenia Jimmy's 4 personalities collide.)

Apologizies ahead of time for being so long (didnt realize till I looked at a lyrics list how closely they linked to avpd) and also sorry if Quadrophenia was already mentioned though I think it would deserve another mention. I'll have to think what other music I can think of.

Lately, I have been listening to a song called John Q Lonely by Maia Sharp.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v55VFoXCncs

Lyrics:
When I first shook hands with John Q. Lonely
We're sitting in a room that held him only
He said don't feel bad I'm just a regular guy

My life is the way that I want it
With nobody else's writing on it
Don't have to waste my time living a lie

You see people like you are never complete
Without a ring on your finger, a dog at your feet
A house on a suburban street named after a tree

Not me

I go to work each day in a little white cube
Come home each night and sit in front of the tube
No one to tell me what to do or say

Cause those distractions I don't need them
What could I love more than freedom?
Something you don't have can't slip away

All the people like you, you cry and you cry
When you find out love's just a four-letter lie
You say, "without her, who am I supposed to be?"

You worry about me?

On his fiftieth birthday John bought a cupcake
Almost wished that he had a namesake
But thought better of that before he blew out the flame

And on this day unlike any other
Just for a moment he imagined his mother
He thought to himself I could have taken her name

All the people like me who spare their regret
Foolishly giving more than we get
We're not stupid enough to let somebody in

Not me, not again

Stay Home from Shrek is the avoidant's hymn to me:

I wanna stay home today
Don't wanna go out
If anyone comes to play
Gonna get thrown out

Got my cup of tea
I don't need nobody but me
What I wouldn't give just to be left alone

Eet, Regina Spektor

You spend half of your life
Trying to fall behind
You're using your headphones
To drown out your mind

A wonderful thing, Lovebugs

Don't hate your loneliness
It's wonderful thing
Let it come over you
Get under its wing

Don't hate your loneliness
It's a wonderful thing
Just like the open sea
You gotta jump right in

Firewater's Get out of my head really does something for me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYMmf9vHncc

Maybe I could be a billionaire
If I wasn't always broke
And I could be a comedian
If I wasn't such a joke
Guess I knew it all along
Being born's where I went wrong
I always took the medication I was fed
Get out of my head
Get out of my head

I could train to be an astronaut
If I weren't afraid of heights
I could be a supermodel
If you turned out all the lights
But all my days are painted grey
And I got nothing much left to say
My ambition is lying underneath the bed
Get out of my head
Get out of my head

Hey all you prestidigitators

Why don't you disappear for good
'Cause Hitler could have been a mediocre painter
Instead of a supercrook
Instead of a supercrook

Maybe I could have a great career
If I could just hold down a job
Or maybe I could be a social butterfly
If I wasn't such a slob
I always wreck everything I got
On every bullet I ever shot
Missed the target 'til I finally hit the red
Get out of my head
Get out of my head...

Don't know if it's been said but Johnny Cash - "Hurt" is somewhat relatable.

What have I become?
My sweetest friend.
Everyone I know,
goes away in the end.

Thought I'd post this for fun.

This one really gets to me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbJzfADbBk0

Rest your tired head now
my friend I will stand by
You don´t have to say no more
I know what you came here for
Eyes sore and shoes untied
walking the streets all night

No new cities lovers friends
can make you feel complete
The sense of loneliness remains
no matter who you meet
When all you pictured failed
and all your dreams are crossed
remember that your strenght is also built
on what you lost

Your blindspot is rejection
and you´ll be on your own
when you´re petrified
of all that´s warm and real
invisible scars take forever to heal
The daylight will soften your mood
come now accept what´s good

The noble art of letting go

One of the two most depressing songs of all time:

Sarah McLachlan - Out Of The Shadows

Crouching down inside a deep ravine
Those angry cries pass quickly by, he can't be seen
So many ways spent hiding in so many undone plans
Forgetting what it's like to fight when no one understands

Close call there in the shadows
There's a fear in the dark
There's one out there

All those memories, pain and anger, flood back one by one
They must be just around the bend, they always come
At night as I lay sleeping they come to me in herds
Their lies remain, the dreams the same, it's only fleeting words

No one calls there in the shadows
There's no end to the dark
But there's one out there, no one but me....

The hours pass so slowly, the life's slipping out of me
No way's the right way. Is there a way out for me?
My life's slipping out...

Rising up, the night is done, and now the bright lights come
Held back in my pitied world where everything's undone
A cold wind blows right through me, I'm made a hollow shell
There's nothing left, just ash remains, enrich the soil, no soil, no soil...

Close call there in the shadows
There's an end to the dark
'Cause there's someone out there
Someone like me...

The hours pass so slowly, the life's slipping out of me
No way's the right way, is there a way out for me
The hours pass so slowly
The life's slipping out of me
Is there a way out for me?
The hours pass so slowly
The life's slipping out of me
Is there a way out for me?
There must be a way out for me...

Maybe not the king of avoidant songs (Creep takes that title), but definitely a contender for runner-up, just for the chorus and video alone.

Video

Afraid of Americans
(D. Bowie/T. Reznor)

Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America
No tricks at the wheel
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
No one needs anyone
They don't even just pretend
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America

[CHORUS]
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans

Johnny's in America
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh

Johnny wants a plane
Johnny wants to suck on a Coke
Johnny wants a woman
Johnny wants to think of a joke
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh

[CHORUS]

I'm afraid of Americans
Uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh

Johnny's in America
Johnny looks up at the stars
Johnny combs his hair
And Johnny wants pussy in cars
Johnny's in America, uh-uh-uh uh, uh, uh-uh uh-uh-uh
Johnny's in America

[CHORUS]

God is an American (x7)

[CHORUS] (x2)
