Songs for avoidants

Postby CriminallyVulgar » Sun Mar 23, 2008 1:40 am

I thought it might be a neat idea to have a thread full of songs avoidants can really relate too. There are a very select few songs out there that when I really listen to the lyrics I'm just like OMG I so relate to that. So feel free to share.

I've heard it dozens of times, but just today for the first time I really listened to the lyrics of Captain Jack by Billy Joel.

--------

Saturday night, and you're still hangin' around.
Tired of living in your one-horse town.
You'd like to find a little hole in the ground,
For awhile.
So you go to the Village in your tie-dyed jeans.
And you stare at the junkies and the closet queens.
It's like some pornographic magazine,
And you smile.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight,
And take you to your special island.
Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

Your sister's gone out,she on a date.
You just sit at home and masturbate.
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call.
So you stand on the corner in your new English clothes.
And you look so polished, from your hair down to your toes.
Ah but still, your finger's gonna pick your nose
After all.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight,
And take you to your special island.
Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

So you decide to take a, holiday.
You got your tape deck and your brand new Chevrolet.
Ah, there ain't no place to go anyway.
What for?
So you got everything, aww, but nothing's cool.
They just found your father in the swimming pool.
And you guess you won't be going back to school
Anymore.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight,
And take you to your special island.
Ohh Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

So you play your albums, and you smoke your pot.
And you meet your girlfriend in the parking lot.
Ohh, but still you're aching for the things you haven't got.
What went wrong?
And if you can't understand why your world is so dead,
Why you've got to keep in style, and feed your head.
Well you're 21 and still your mother makes your bed,
And that's too long.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight.
And take you to your special island.
Well now Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.
Ohh, Captain Jack will get you high tonight.
And take you to your special island.
Well now, Captain Jack could make you die tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

-------

So yea. Share. Cause ya know, wallowing in self pity is one of my favorite pass times. Nothing's quite as nice as a song that hits so close to home it makes me ######6 sob. :D

Sorry, I don't want to pollute your forums, but I feel silly tonight.

I don't know about a song for depressed avoidants, but this is the perfect song for depressed schizoids! :

I feel silly tonight too. It must be the 4 bottles of cough syrup I drank.

And that video was awesome.

Robert Plant - Big Log

No idea what the title refers to but the song sums up the monotony and dashed hopes of the avoidant's life.

I love that Billy Joel song. So relatable, except I don't do heroin.

Radiohead - Creep

When you were here before,
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel,
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so ######6 special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts,
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
when I'm not around
You're so ######6 special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here, ohhhh, ohhhh

She's running out the door
She's running out
She run run run run...
run...

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so ######6 special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't belong here...

Morrissey - The World Is Full of Crashing Bores

You must be wondering how
The boy next door turned out
Have a care, But don't stare
Because he's still there
Lamenting policewomen policemen silly women taxmen
Uniformed whores, They who wish to hurt you, Work within the law
This world is full, So full of crashing bores
And I must be one, 'Cos no one ever turns to me to say
Take me in your arms, Take me in your arms, And love me

You must be wondering how
The boy next door turned out
Have a care, And say a prayer
Because he's still there

Lamenting policewomen policemen silly women taxmen
Uniformed whores, Educated criminals, Work within the law
This world is full, Oh oh, So full of crashing bores
And I must be one, cos no one ever turns to me to say
Take me in your arms, Take me in your arms
And love me, And love me

What really lies, Beyond the constraints of my mind
Could it be the sea, With fate mooning back at me
No it's just more lock jawed pop stars
Thicker than pig $#%^, Nothing to convey
They're so scared to show intelligence
It might smear their lovely career

This world, I am afraid, Is designed for crashing bores
I am not one, I am not one
You don't understand, You don't understand, And yet you can
Take me in your arms and love me, Love me, And love me

Take me in your arms and love me, Love me, love me
Take me in your arms and love me, Take me in your arms and love me

Morrissey - Last Night I Dreamt that Somebody Loved Me

Last night I dreamt
That somebody loved me
No hope, no harm
Just another false alarm

Last night I felt
Real arms around me
No hope, no harm
Just another false alarm

So, tell me how long
Before the last one ?
And tell me how long
Before the right one ?

The story is old - I KNOW
But it goes on
The story is old - I KNOW
But it goes on

Oh, GOES ON
And on
Oh, goes on
And on

That Solitary Shell song was good.

Creep by Radiohead is definatly something I can understand. I've been told I come off as a wierdo and quite creepy. Back in college one time I was hanging out with one of my few aquaintences and his girlfriend came over. she said something like "oh hi. I always see you outside the dorm smoking cigarettes alone in a corner. I would have said hi but i was worried you might stab me" I was like "gee....... thanks" That was really great for my selfesteem.

Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me. That one I can really relate to. It's really depressing. I don't know which is the original but The Smiths also did a version of that song. I think somebody told me before that the singer/songwriter of The Smiths is an avoidant. Which I easily believe after hearing some of their stuff.

One song that I think is an absolute avoidant anthem is this one

"How Soon is Now?" - The Smiths

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

I am the son
and the heir
of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and the heir
of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

There's a club if you'd like to go
you could meet somebody who really loves you
so you go, and you stand on your own
and you leave on your own
and you go home, and you cry
and you want to die

When you say it's gonna happen "now"
well, when exactly do you mean?
see I've already waited too long
and all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
how can you say
I go about things the wrong way
I am human and I need to be loved
just like everybody else does

Yeah Stephen Morrissey is the singer/songwriter of the Smiths, I think the first song was his solo work and I'm not sure if the second one was with the Smiths or not. I definitely think he was an avoidant, his lyrics describe my feelings better than anyone else can.

For me this is the song that pointed me out that something was wrong with me. I usualy don't listen to lyrics that much, I'm more into melody. It describes the thing perfectly for me.

Simon And Garfunkel - I am a rock

A winters day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Ive built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Dont talk of love,
But Ive heard the words before;
Its sleeping in my memory.
I wont disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.
