What worked to build a healthy relationship

What did you need to find a healthy balance in a romantic relationship that allowed for you to be able to maintain it long term and possibly even commit to that person?

I've heard about taking it very very slowly, building trust but letting the partner struggling with avoidance to take the lead on that?

Please share your stories about what was successful for you in building that relationship and keeping it.
