Valium works very much like alcohol, so for sure it can help with social inhibitions but it's highly addictive and like alcohol, it can make you act like a prick. I did actually have a girlfriend who had BPD and one time when she phoned me and told me that she was having a manic episode all that I could really suggest was that she took a valium because that's the only thing that's going to help when they're like that and when the cops caught her and took her back to the mental hospital that's what they gave her, as I knew that they would. Couldn't tell her that though and she was actually surprised that smoking a couple of joints didn't help.

My family has actually been trying to get me sectioned because I've gone no contact with them and they've been trying to say that I've got cannabis psychosis. My sister is a psychiatric nurse that works with children and I've told the police that I'm concerned about her children and those that she works with because she's like Nurse Ratchet from One flew over the coocoo's nest and she's covering up the fact that my mother (who she's letting look after her kids) is psychotic.

Okay, you said you used to be addicted to Valium so for that to happen they must have prescribed it to you many times, so that's why I wasn't sure if you were UK.

Your family can't get you sectioned, even if they make stuff up about you. Doctors need a good reason to get a judge to approve it and "his sister reckons he's psychotic" is not a good reason.

Penny, there are many ways to get a valium script. If a patient complains about severe anxiety attacks it's an emergency and they will give you it unless they think that you've got a substance abuse or dependency problem and what you are failing to acknowledge is that this reluctance to prescribe it is fairly recent and I know people that signed a contract as drug addicts and are still getting it, even though it's thought to cause brain damage.

They can section you if they think that you are suicidal. It takes just two doctor's signatures and they can lock you up.

I've always found it very hard to get medication with addiction potential, all doctors/surgeries seem to be the same. No one's ever bothered locking me up even after I did try to kill myself. In the 19 years since I first came to the attention of mental health services, my consistent experience is that their aim is to get you out the door so they can move on to the next patient. They don't care if you're actually well or not, they just want you to go away and stop putting pressure on the system. I think you'd have to run into a hospital and start throwing knives at people before they'd take you away and give you some proper treatment.

From what I've heard it is indeed getting more and more like that and they don't really want to admit people to mental hospitals. My experience is a little bit different though. I've had a fair number of doctors and nurses trying to tell me that I'm depressed and getting pissed off with me not agreeing or wanting treatment for it.

I am actually avoiding my doctor. They definetly want men my age to come in for prostate examinations. They would just tell me that I'm being absurd if I told them that I've got this fear of intimacy but it's one of the reasons that I changed my GP. I have quite a good relationship with the doctor that I see now but if he did that to me I don't think that I could really deal with him again. Last time I spoke to him it was on the phone and I just told him that I do have this disorder and he accepted that without argument and was sympathetic.
