I wouldn't generalize this to all doctors....

And I mean how many people here have mocked patients/clients/costumers behind their back?

doctors are human too...and work these days is stressful...so while you may hunt for slips in order to validate your suspicions of people being secretly critical of others including yourself it says little of the general population

There's a HUGE difference between doing it to someone behind his back and doing it to someone who is right in front of you under anethesia. And some people can hear and remember what was said while they were under. From the ratemd post:

I had the same thing happen to me in surgery. My body was put out first before my mind was, and while I lay there unable to move, helpless, I listened while all of them mocked and gossiped about me, and even talked about my genitals. I don't have a tape recording for proof. When I reported it I wasn't taken seriously and was even re-victimized. This happens more than you think it does. My trust in doctors is totally shattered!

i have seen quite a few patients under sedation.
first let me remind you that if you smoke, then you are 50% more likely not to wake up.
anesthesia is a well paid art. if you are going to medical school this is your best bet.

secondly, you do not want to hear how the doctor talks to the nurses so it is better to realize that humor is needed sometimes. don't you think the mechanic that works on your car makes harrassing comments about you if you are a nice looking female or talks of what he would do to you if you are a dominant male? we are humans. a couple of words will not cause your leg to fall off especially if you are not awake to hear it.

you know, i remember one time at the OR when they were doing leg amputations that day.
one patient who needed the left leg amputated ended up in the wrong room. they chopped his right leg.
a few hours later, the nurse realized the mistake and called the surgeon. he went ahead and cut off the other leg. everyone was aghast at how it didn't seem to bother him. i asked why he wasn't worried that they might sue or something. he told me there was no need to worry about any lawyers because the patient had no leg to stand on...
ask the right question and the answer is contained within.

There is a line though isn't there between harmless banter and patient abuse? I don't think doctors should cross that line, not in surgery. They can have a laugh about it in the bar after work!!

This is the problem. Doctors don't give a $#%^ about patients. They can screw up and it doesn't bother them a bit. It's all just a joke if they cause someone to suffer for the rest of his life. I bet the dentist who made over $10,000 by putting a ton of acrylic in my mouth that he KNEW I was allergic to had a good laugh over that -while I suffered years of pain and more tens of thousands of dollars of work trying to reduce my pain.

If you deal with the kind of crap doctors and nurses deal with everyday, you will eventually develop a twisted sense of humor. It's a coping mechanism.

I've been in several ORs. In one the surgeon had to cut off some part of a completely demented woman's ear. She was conscious, but due to her mental state might as well have been under anesthesia. The surgeon joked around during the entire operation. When he was finished with the ear, he asked me how it looks and I said "She looks like an elf now." He said "Really? She reminds me more of Gollum to be honest."

I'm pretty sure that surgeon's dehumanize their patients in order to make the process of cutting them open easier for themselves. That's also partly the reason why during most operations they don't see the patients face or the rest of his body, only the part they are operating on.

Are people not paying attention? People love making fun of others. There are very few of us who don't get off on it. And sorry to tell you, a person under the gas, does not equate more victimized. Not to say I agree with the dispicable nature of the satiracle creatures in this senecio, they are so inhumane, but, but they are all a part of the same guild, and that is the guild of psychopath. I would say a great many avoidants have been victims of these creatures who walk among us wearing human flesh.

UR back. I worked in a psych hospital for years and I saw staff mock patients. I didn't - very often. When I realized I was doing it I stopped. That kind of thing was noted by the inspectors who decertified the place. Once you start to dehumanize the patient it makes it easier to mistreat them and patient care suffers. Mocking patients at work should not be tolerated.
