Socail skills and the spectrum

Postby Maenad » Sat Aug 25, 2012 8:43 pm

Have any of you learned social skills to mitigate autism or the other disorders on the autism spectrum such as aspergers or PDD capable of doing the same?

Up to a point, yes. Do you have anything specific in mind?

Are you thinking about any specific skill?
Like small talk, social chit-chat, emotional responsiveness?

With experience I've gotten much better at reading expressions/social cues and knowing the effects of different responses to them. So yes.
I don't believe everything I think.

Did you read a book on facial expressions? If so, what was it called? I want to get it for my friend.

I read some stuff about Eckman's work, but it would probably be better to go right to the source.

Of course the face isn't everything. People seem to be raving about "What Every BODY is Saying" which is admittedly a corny title, but I suspect that Joe knows what he's talking about. http://www.amazon.com/What-Every-BODY-Saying-Speed-Reading/dp/0061438294/ref=cm_rdp_product

There is a wide range of books out there. I'd be cautious of books that are specifically about detecting lies. In my experience they usually mention a bunch of cues that signal anxiety, discomfort, etc. and say that these are proof of deception. As if lying was the only thing that made people nervous. Still if you bear that in mind they do contain some useful information.

I hope that's helpful.
