Not bathing

Postby jeffsi435 » Wed Apr 11, 2012 10:06 pm

I am working with a young teenage girl who is 16 years old who refuses to bath herself. She has gone over two weeks several times without bathing and even then has to be made by a female worker or her mother to do so. She is able to do so, but is mother has to force her to do so. She has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS. As a young teenager she was able to bath herself fine, but a few years ago this stopped.

There is also compulisve lying and stealing behavior.

I am wondering if this is common with those with PDD, regarding the bathing issue?

Some autistic people don't like to bathe because it causes physical sensory pain. For other people, it can be just not a priority, there are more important things they want to do and the need for social grooming to be polite to others does not bother them.

Speaking from personal experience - I used to be a little worse about it but now I found that I enjoy reading a book in the bath, so now I take a bath every day because it's my time when I can read and don't get distracted.

So, first, ask her if she feels any physical pain from bathing, if not, then, maybe there is something she would like to do in the bath that can make it more of a priority for her to do it.
