Do other people know you're autistic?

Postby pamelaperejil » Mon Jul 23, 2018 8:58 pm

Do they know about your diagnosis? Can they see that you're "off"? Or do you manage to blend in? If they don't know your diagnosis but see that you're off, to what do they attribute this strangeness to? A #######5 character? Lack of discipline? Selfishness? Lack of concern for others? Stupidity? Childishness? Some kind of gift?

Where I live now, I've never told any neighbours I have autism. Immediate family knows and someone who was my friend at university as they stayed in touch after I'd had the meltdown. (though we don't really talk about it).

I have been told I think differently. I have also been informed that I don't reciprocate communication properly similar to alogia. I haven't figured out if these are Autistic or Schizotypy traits. I assume most of my interactions were with people who did not know people on either spectrum. Then again, not sure who would come out and directly say it.

Why schizotypy rather than schizoid? Do you see things, hear things?

Hallucinations are usually only under Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective or psychosis. Schizoid, Schizotypal, prodromal Schizophrenia and even Avoidant all fall or may fall under the schizo spectrum but don't necessarily have hallucinations.

The Coolidge Autistic Symptoms Survey (CASS) is also supposed to distinguish between the two but it's for children. I don't have access to brain imaging but I have read up on hyper/hypo-mentalizing and I can't really place myself. It's possible I am both with each one passed down by a different parent.
