I have trouble with this kind of stuff too. One thing I've noticed is that when people are truly angry they are quieter than when they are being funny or sarcastically angry. If they use a lot shorter words/phrases than normal or they sigh loudly/frequently, they are probably really not happy.

My emotion-detection isn't all that reliable, so I've practiced apologizing to people and telling them that I have some trouble figuring out exactly when and why people are angry or sad. They don't always forgive you right away, but it will most likely make them less angry. They might be confused, sure, but people do tend to calm down some when they realize you weren't meaning to hurt them.

When I was younger I had a similar issue of not being able to understand emotions... At one point, of my youth, I wouldn't have even realized that was anger. As I evolved into a more sociocentric mindset I began to understand more; like in this circumstance she wasn't angry at you, she was angry at the radio. She likely wasn't even fully focusing on your joke, but was pre-occupied on the radio.

From what I've learned, normal people are really simple minded, while people like us tend to over-analyze things & try to find a meaning where there isn't one. I've fallen for logical over-analysis many times in my life & I'm sure I'll be there again, but keeping an open mind to other possibilities is what helps my empathetic perception.
