Dopamine blockers

Postby V0iD » Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:24 pm

Hi guys! I don't have ADHD, but for other reasons I'm taking dopamine blockers and it severly reduces my energy (hyperactivity) and sensitivity to pleasure (impulsivity). Anyone who has ADHD ever tried dopamine blockers?
It would probably fix most of the problems.
Of course it wouldn't develop your will-power just like that, but playing video games or partying would be less fun, so that it would be easier for you to do your home work from school because the distractions would be less.

person A does not have disorder B.
person A has side effect C while taking drug D.
therefore person with disorder B should take drug D.

the problem with the hypothesis is that the person with disorder B has a neurological defect that results in drug D not having the same effect in this person as the person without the defect.

that said, have you contacted shire pharmaceuticals (patent holders of ritalin)? they might be interested in your research.

the standard 'treatment' for ADHD is amphetamines (ritalin/adderall) and these are dopamine reuptake inhibitors, and they have the effect of stimulating the dopamine pathway, which presumably is naturally low in these individuals. for this reason, a dopamine blocker would be anticipated to make the symptoms WORSE in these individuals, not better.

however, thanks for the suggestion, and i hope there is some large pharm company that pursues your line of inquiry, that this debate might be settled and these patients helped!
I never gave anybody hell! I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.

There's no need to contact the pharmaceutical companies. I'll set the record straight. When I was 13, my 8th grade teacher assaulted me. Sexist pigs have been trying to do that to me for a very long time bc I won't take their macho crap. This teacher was the first. He picked me up by my jacket lapels and bounced my head off a wall. I tried to complain to his boss and my mom, so we could get the police to charge him.

Well, what a song and dance that teacher concocted to cover his ass. 'Delusional' they called me. So they sent me to this shrink whose area of expertise was schizophrenia. Well, read your David L. Rosenhan if you want the rest of that story.

Long story short, the dopamine blockers made me sick. I felt as if somebody had crammed 5 lbs of sand and steel wool into every opening in my head. My mouth was dry like I'd been stranded out hitchhiking all day in August with no water. My limbs were heavy, and I was having trouble moving. I was nauseous, and bright lights and loud noise seemed to make the nausea worse. The feeling was similar to heatstroke, or a bad hangover, except with that yucky steel-wooly itchy-burny feeling in my head. It was horrible! I stopped taking it after the first dose. I tried to tell my doctor, but he was hell bent on following the word of the little Boys' Club that landed me in his office. He actually increased the dosage.

And that was my first lesson in how to placebo the doctors. I flushed my pills and told the doctor I was taking them. He found out eventually, when we did some bloodwork. By that time, my teacher was singing my praises, believing that there was some change in me that was caused by meds I wasn't even taking. LMAO when they figured it out.

If the dopamine blockers make you feel better, V0iD, by all means, cooperate with your doctor and keep taking them. You're lucky to have a good doctor you can work with. Treat the opportunity like a blessing. Good psychiatrists are rare.
