I just read your message and thought I would just reply with this little bit of information.
I have an 6 year old son with ADHD ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) He had all the same behaviors as your son. I have him on Meds now it has helped with those issues. Now I have to worry about the side effects of the meds alone. My son set our house on fire three times before I took him and had him put on his meds. When he was a toddler we used to have to lock him in his room at night just so we could get some sleep. My husband took a baby gate made of the net material so he could see out of his room. This way he did not feel locked in because I felt so bad about locking him in like I was mistreating him in some way. Still to this day with his meds he is demanding and strong willed but life is better than it was I think it will always be some what hard. My older son has become very angrey from this ADHD effects the whole family. just pray every day an take alot of deap breaths. Good luck

ADHD

Postby CherryOnTop » Tue Sep 20, 2005 4:34 pm

Your list of concerns sounds alot like mine. It seems like I have more though. I am so frustrated. The school gave my son an evaluation when he was 5 in kindergarten. He was found to be ADHD. It was free to go through the school system. He's eight years old now and I'm still frustrated. It seems like the medication doesn't work sometimes. With the medication it seems like he gets too tired. He's been on Risperdal, Adderrall, and Ritalin. The doctor increased the Adderrall to 30mg and he had hallucinations back in August. I took him to the emergency room and they made it seem like I overdosed him. His psychiatrist said Adderrall doesn't have that side effect and to keep him on it. He's not on it anymore. I'm not going through what I went through at that time with him anymore. It seems evil. He didn't have the problem before the medication and he's not having it now.

I'm in the process also of trying to receive Social security for his disability.

My son is:
Demanding, loud, bossy, impulsive, aggressive, in trouble at school, mean, and just doesn't listen at times. He used to curse heavily, but now he tries to watch his mouth. He hates to listen to adults. He also wets the bed and hisself during the day while playing. He hates restriction. On the other hand he likes to share at times, he knows when he's wrong 20% of the time.

I have him in FOOTBALL and Basketball now. His ability to pay attention to the coach is low.Friends and family say that he will grow out of it. WHEN?

Sometimes I feel like I've been punished or I'm just a terrible parent. I'm trying now to get him tested for Bipolar or what ever else could be the problem.

It could be ADHD and I have personally seen children respond beautifully to medications. Since you mentioned that your child has a long history of being unable to sleep at night -another possiblity could be a sleep disorder which can cause serve behavior in children due to extreme exhaustion for an extended period of time.

Usually doctors will start with a medication treatment for ADHD first since it is often the the most easy to achieve a diagnosis. If the medication works and behavior significantly improves, the theory is if it quacks like a duck-it probably is a duck. If meds are still not effective with a child's behaviors-then they look at other possible issues. My suggestion is to bring up the possibility of a sleep disorder because of his/her long history of not sleeping at night to your ped.

My observations is that usually ADHD kids will fight about not wanting to go to sleep at night and cause a lot of distress for the family, but once they clam down and hit the bed-they are usually out of for the entire night. If bedwitting is a primary problem, in boys it is often caused by an abnormal short urineary track which they will out grow as their body grows or a distribance with their sleep and not being able to come out of REM sleep. These conditions usually run in families.

Just my 02 cents worth of an opinion.

The medical literature has several case reports of psychosis (including hallucinations) caused by prescribed doses of Adderall (and Dexedrine). This is a pretty rare reaction, but it is not unheard of -- except, I guess, by your health care providers.

For example, an article titled "Adderall-induced psychosis in an adolescent" in the Journal of the American Board of Family Practice can be obtained for free (in Adobe Acrobat format) at http://www.jabfp.org/cgi/reprint/15/6/498

I found this through PubMed, a great database of biomedical journal articles, at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12463297

You might want to share that article with this psychiatrist or anyone else who isn't familiar with this phenomena. In most people, it does take a very large dose of amphetamines (which Adderall is) for psychosis to occur, but apparently in a few people small doses can do it.

Unfortunately all medications have a risk of side effects, and their efficacy varies between people. But you might want to ask your psychiatrist about non-amphetamine/non-stimulant medication like Wellbutrin or Atomoxetine (a newer one), which are sometimes used with ADHD.

I have inattentive ADHD, and I'm currently taking Wellbutrin (bupropion), which is working pretty well. I've seen mixed reviews of it online: some people like it and others don't. But this study found that it tended to work well in children: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=8885585

Good luck with dealing with all these problems!
