Testing?

Postby meriwether » Fri Sep 25, 2009 5:07 am

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had my first appointment with an Attention specialist and filled out 4 pages of questions that was used in an hour interview session. She said that it definitely sounded like I had ADD, but now she wants me to come back for a 3 hour test that has sections on ADD as well as IQ, emotional problems...etc. I am not depressed. I do not have bi-polar symptoms, and I graduated from a major university with a 3.0 and never opened a book, so I think my IQ is average to above average. Do I really need this test? My insurance will pay for it, but I have a $200 deductible and I have only used $85 of that. I have an appointment with my primary care physician on Monday. Do you think she could just write the meds based off of the screening questionaire that I took? This test seems like something that would be useful with a child to make sure they did not have learning disabilities, but I think I am past that.

If you want their help, you play their game. If you want the insurance to cover you, then you keep jumping through hoops till the doctor tells the insurance company that she's satisfied.

ok...went to the primary care physician and it did not go very well. She said I should not get tested at all. She said there is some kind of stigma associated with ADD and I may not be able to get a job or life insurance with an ADD diagnosis. She said that even if I struggled in school, yet got through, then that was good enough. I am frustrated.

I remember being in school and being the absolutely last person to turn in a test every single time. I do not want to struggle when I go back in the spring. Is that a bad thing?

I was always the opposite of you. I was usually one of the first finished. My speed was fast and I could not work any other way, hence why I think I did so poorly in the stuff they stretched on and on... particularly math. I'm still like that, actually, but I have learned to slow down some.

Also, ADD is not a diagnosis that will keep you from getting a job- not here, anyway, don't know where you are... It does cause cause some complications though. If you feel like it is something that is hampering your life, then you should try to get some help for it. Perhaps get a second opinion from another doctor?

Well, Quasar, you must have been the child yelling at the last person left taking the test because they were keeping you in from recess. HA!
