Ask him exactly what he wants. Find out 4 or 5 things that are appropriate and that he would really like. If the gift iss someting that is useless to him he will let you know and it shant be looked at after the holiday (could be burned, tossed in the trash, or tucked back in the farthest possible corner!)

Speak-a-boo is pretty much right. Unless you have a few hours or days to kill and just hang around him and try to trigger a few monologues about everything in the universe that he has an interest in (God help people that ask me questions like that... it's like "here is everything I've ever learned about [insert random subject] in one long disseration") I'd suggest you just ask them what they want.

You can even say "I want to buy you a present and I have this much to spend. Figure out what you want and tell me."

If you want to roll the dice, the main thing that pops into my head is www.thinkgeek.com

A person could safely shop at that site for gifts for me for the rest of my life. Batteries? Lights? Technology? Is it possible to have too many? I think not.

Or if you really dislike his parents get him some of the caffiene candy...
