Irritating sounds

Postby Dixetia » Sat Mar 10, 2012 10:22 pm

I was diagnosed with asperger this week,
and it feels kinda good to know.

There's one thing I'd like to discuss and that is different sounds and noises...
When I'm writing this I'm having problems with some neighbours that play awful
music and scream/talks like crazy and they lower and tune up the volume all the time
which is very annoying. When I hear sounds I really don't like it's like I'm paralyzed
and all I want is to make them go away. Also I don't want to do anything special
until the sound stops. Easiest way to make the sounds go away is with some music that I like,
which is why I always have my phone or my mp3 with me when I'm out.
I also hear distant or subtile sounds and noises no one else can hear or care about, and it irritates
the crap out of me sometime. Does anything of this sounds familliar to you?
I'm scared to death that I'll never be afraid

I was in a doctors office last week that had two clocks ticking, one on each side of me. The worst thing was they were out of sync from each other and i was unable to concentrate on what he was saying to me.
I do not understand the gestural prototheatre of everyday life.

Oh I know how that feels... That's why I can't stand having more than one clock in my apartment.
And I'm lucky my clock is fairly silent.

Sounds that bother me (This list was edited because it was too long)

-Cars with squeaking tires
-Cars with loud music I don't like
-Cars that make noises that shouldn't be happening to a car
-People with high voices
-People with low voices
-People wih certain accents (Like the people from South Atlanta)
-People with long fingernails who scratch their head
-People who click their fingernails
-Train wheels
-Stopping trains
-The squeaking parts of a train
-The sound an old TV makes when it comes on
-The sound an old TV makes when it's been on too long
-The sound an old TV makes when it's turning off
-Pencils with lead bigger than .5 writing on paper
-Sharpening of pencils
-Squeaking pencils
-Certain types of music (rap, country, hip-hop, screamo)
-Books on tape (UGHHHH!)
-Shoe squeaking
-People crying
-People screaming
-Certain languages (Spanish irrates me for some reason, though I like to read Spanish)
-The back of my cell phone when I take off the battery cover
-Screeching of any type
-Squeaking of any tiem
-Glass breaking
-Certain types of trash bags (like shopping bags)
-Long silences

I decided to stop here because this list is already too long. So yes. Sounds irritate me.
People don't understand what I'm talking about because I talk about things people don't understand.

I find repetitive sounds to be really irritating. I hate all the dinging the car does when the door is left open, keys left in, someone not wearing their seatbelt, etc... as well as the aforementioned ticking of the clock. I also startle very easily from unexpected sounds. I refuse to hook my doorbell up b/c I find it so jarring. I dread new year's and 4th of July b/c of the random fireworks that the neighbors set off at all hours days before and after the holidays. I've always been afraid of balloons b/c I'm so afraid of them popping. Our neighbors across the street are constantly coming and going at all hours and the sound of their car doors slamming is both startling and irritating tho not as bad as a frequent visitor of theirs who drove a very noisy pickup truck w/ a modified horn that sounded like a ship's foghorn which he felt the need to use upon each of his arrivals and departures no matter what time it was. :!: My son and I would literally jump out of our skin every time we heard it. Sooo glad he doesn't come around anymore.

Yes, this sounds very familiar!

I have spent many years thinking I was overly sensitive to noises, and neurotic for finding so many things annoying that few other people seem to notice. Now I have some idea why

Like you, I try not to leave the house without .mp3 and earphones. For longer periods of time when I really need to concentrate (and when absolutely anything and everything will annoy and distract me), I resort to noise-cancelling headphones ... they are remarkably effective (although I can hear the white noise used in the noise cancelling process).

What an amazing invention the the ipod; dont know how Id manage with out it...
To put your life in danger from time to time... breeds a saneness in dealing with day-to-day trivialities.

I would recommend a solo flight to all prospective suicides. It tends to make clear the issue of whether one enjoys being alive or not.

Not that you asked for lists from people but I will volunteer a short one anyway:

The sound of people touching pottery (I hate the feel of it as well though)
I hate hearing anyone eat, if I focus on this it goes straight through me.
Phones ringing are particularly grating
Sudden variations in the amplitude (both up and down) startle me though.
Children in general even though I work in a school and right now im surrounded by thirty 9 year olds.
The sound of someone having too much saliva in their mouth as they speak such that it makes a slightly squelchy sound is awful (but rare thankfully).
Dogs barking

This could get long so I will stop here.

The I must give you this question;
What is most irritating, a small dog or a larger one?

Small ones with the more piercing yappy type noises but both are bad.
