How did you find out you had AS

Postby ogr » Mon Jan 23, 2012 1:10 pm

Hello

When did you first know you had AS, and when did you expect something was not "normal"?

Here goes mine. Apparently a few hours after birth, my mum thought something was wrong with me due to not bonding with people, ie, not breast feeding, not liking being touched, anyone standing above my cot, things went on and on, when I was older thing got worse and progressed.

The school I visited wanted me to be tested, sent me to a place to get tested I had AS. However when my mum was talking to the head teacher, the head said things that would put me in the back of the class and ignored. I have AS but asked the tester to write to the school saying no AS, but my GP had a letter saying I do. I have never told any school, but told college that I have AS.

When I was 4-ish, my dad was diagnosed with PDD-NOS through his work and they suggested to him it was genetic when he said he had two kids, one of whom was a lot like him (me). He decided to have me tested through his work-program, because they were doing a study on the genetics of Autism Related Disorders and would do it for free. I was officially diagnosed at age 5 after eight therapy visits and tests. I don't remember the testing or anything, but I do remember having my brain scanned and having to write using both my hands and just...talking for as long as I could about stuff. I don't think this is normal for the regular old AS diagnosis. Mine was diagnosed through a study, so they wanted to get all the information possible...

My brother, on the other hand, was diagnosed as possible PDD-NOS through a autism therapist when he was 10 (I was 12). Diagnosis cost $1000 plus the cost of therapy sessions and came out to be a big fat Maybe.
People don't understand what I'm talking about because I talk about things people don't understand.

My mother who at the time had recently became an Ultrasound Tech found the AS description in a medical dictionary and thought, "hmm this sounds just like...". After that she took me to a therapist where they diagnosed me with it.

I first suspected it back in August of last year, although I've never been officially diagnosed. See my first post...

Aside from all that I wrote in there, I have steadily become more aware of my stims and things like that. I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I want to pursue a professional dx.

I haven't a clue if I actually have AS or not, but I've always felt out of place and awkward. Parents told me I never cried as a baby, I usually went off on my own, played by my self as a kid. Didn't have any actual friends until about 7th grade(3 friends). In the 8 or so years since then, on my own, I've made maybe 2 friends on my own without mutual friends introducing me to them. so out of those 5, today I still talk to 4 of them. Those last 2 were mostly due to an mutual "interest" investment on my part. The first 2/3 developed into a mutual "interest" investment also around 11th grade. Never really felt comfy in social situation, and seems to flip flop with no interest in social situation at all. Ever since my first "intimate" encounter I've lost desire for relationship for the most part compounded with the probability of a person or me being crazy as $#%^, I prefer to be alone now a days.

Mostly why I suspect AS/schizoid.
