Asperger's and getting overwhelmed?

Postby Leslieslsa » Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:14 am

I technically have PDD-NOS, but this is the closest forum I can find. Well sometimes my meltdowns include me hand flapping, walking around in circles, punching walls, or something of the sort. But then other meltdowns turn into self hatred and I literally will try to push everyone out of my life. Sever all ties. I will call in to quit my job, tell people I don't want to be friends with them anymore because it's too overwhelming, sometimes even take a bunch of pills to get out of it. I have heard from other aspies that do things such as this. I basically sabotage my life. Luckily, people are generally used to it and pay it no mind. I am just wondering if anyone else gets that overwhelmed? It all happened because my grandmother had been screaming at me all day. And my hearing can't handle it.

I know two times I broke down crying because my mom had gotten mad at me for something.
I know I threw a mild tantrum (i think) when we were going to see some michael Jackson thing (yes. I don't like michael jacksons Music).

What? MJ was a musical visionary and you didnt want to see him perform? Shame on you... :? What a privillage that wouldve been... Anyways... Yes I do get easily overwelmed; when this happens I will get way as fast as possible from the offending stimuli and revisit when somewhat calm...

I would recommend a solo flight to all prospective suicides. It tends to make clear the issue of whether one enjoys being alive or not.

I basically sabotage my life.

I feel the same way often, although I stop short of punching walls. Definitely flap my hands and pace in a circle.

Self-sabotage is more subtle in my case, but the self-hatred was definitely there when I was younger.

When I get overwhelmed I simply flee, go for a long walk, or at least to the bathroom, anywhere I can be alone. If I had someone screaming at me all day, and couldn't escape, I'm not sure what I would do, but it wouldn't be pretty. You have my sympathy.

Remember, there's no reason to hate yourself; it's not your fault. Try telling your grandmother that calmly, and make it clear her behavior is setting you off.

Not sure if it will help in your case, but this has helped me in the past: I simply tell someone I'm not going to allow them to bother me any longer. Even if saying that doesn't change their behavior at all, it helps me--it's like I've neutralized their power over me. It even works if you don't actually say it to them, just imagine you did. The important thing is to not allow them to control your mood.
