Adult Mentors with AS?

Postby csanon » Tue Feb 22, 2011 4:48 pm

Does anyone know how to find adult mentors with AS who can share advice of how they dealt with the struggles of careers, relationships, etc., in a one-on-one fashion?

About me: I am in my early thirties, was diagnosed with autism at age 2, but had lots of treatment growing up, and my major symptoms subsided by adolescence. Since then, I've gone on to make a few life-long friends, as well as complete college and graduate school. However, I still struggle in many aspects of relationships, and have been let go from two jobs in the last year, at least in part due to symptoms which I now realize are from AS. Going through this process has been mind-blowing to say the least. It's like being diagnosed all over again.

That said, I think that having such a mentor could really help give me perspective on where to go from here.

With lot's of luck i guess. :)
Personally i can't stand talking to people in general, and certainly not someone like myself and even less someone like myself with growing pains. Nothing personal, but the idea to be face to face and listening to their problems isn't something i'd do even for money.

Can't imagine another adult with a good dose of AS being able to. Writing here on the board is about as far as i go, i can just not read, or just not respond as i wish.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I would say you should get a profesional diangosis, you don't need a mentor, there are other ways that people with aspergers can get help, but you should ask someone specialized in aspergers to know the specifics.

As a side note, I think there should be a sticky for people who think they have aspergers and that would indicate the best/more convenient steps to follow, in order to get help like point 1) get diagnosed 2) attend evaluations 3)wait for results 4) go to the recommended workshops 5) and so on, since many people have been asking the same time of question lately, and it also seems many people did not get the help they needed in time, even after years being diagnosed.
