How do you talk to someone you suspect has AS?

Postby Guest » Thu Apr 21, 2005 2:32 pm

I have a co-worker, about 26 years of age, that I suspect has Asperger's Syndrome. How do I talk to them about it in a way that is non-offensive? I would really like to be a friend to this person and help them out. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've had the same dillemma twice with people I wanted to help.

Both times, I do not think I got through. Both of them attibute their problems with people due to psychological problems. I believe AS is the cause of some of those psychological problems, same as those that would develop in a person with a physical disability in a world he/she was treated as a second class citizen and no social support.

I would approach by beating around the bush about difficulties with people. Then if the person opens up, agreeing they do have a difficulty they cannot place a finger on, I'd suggest the following to read:

http://www.borderlinepersonality.ca/aspergers.htm

This is a useful read and I've yet to come across another that describes being an aspie to non-aspies so well.

Speak to him as you would speak to a normal person. I have AS myself, and the worst thing i know is when people customize themselves to make me understand. This hurts, because it makes you feel dumb and unworthy. From personal experiences, I suggest that you don't confront him with his diagnosis.
Nobody knows what it's like to be me, still, how can I know what it's like to be normal.
To be honest, I wouldn't want a normal persons brain if I was paid to change to it
