"socially immature"

Postby snail_clippers » Sat Mar 21, 2009 5:57 pm

What does socially immature mean in respect to adults with AS? Does it mean that they secretly enjoy acting like children? Or that their overall social skills are all reduced?

Like which is more accurate:

A) Social immaturity in Asperger's sufferers is best described as the AS sufferer feeling more comfortable and happy with acting like an immature human (like a child, child like "cuteness" behavior, teenage behavior, etc).

or

B) Social immaturity in Asperger's sufferers is best described as the AS sufferer not completely understanding social rules, such as not knowing how hard to shake hands, or to shake hands, knowing where to stand in a job interview, not knowing what should be said after someone talks about a bad day at the office.

Ya know? Does it mean childish social immaturity or "ignorant" of adult social rules and behaviors?

First B then A, as you age and learn, imo.

Edit: So A, since you said adults <.<.(Didn't read too closely)

I'm not professionally diagnosed, but that sounds accurate in my own transition. I can really enjoy acting immature.

I agree with the first B then A consensus.

I haven't really gotten past the B yet though.. I have some things to learn yet in those areas.

But with acting immature, it's not conscious for me. It's just that when I compare myself to other people my age, I act much younger in terms of the things I'm interested in mostly. I don't have kids for instance, or notice what I should be wearing for a woman my age. I don't define myself by a relationship or occupation.

Before my father died he asked my why a 40 year old would want to act like a 16 year old. I told him I didn't want to act any certain way, that I was just being myself. That was the first time I began to think about these things.

I acted immaturely and was always acting a clown up until the age of 24 when I probably lost my inner child and became a grumpy miserable sod. Occasionally if I am happy, the inner child appears briefly until somebody brings me back to my melancholy state of normalness by pissing me off.

how can you NOT be socially immature when you have a disorder that makes it very slow for you to learn socializing.

it took me about 35 years to get to the same level as an average 18 yr old. that's my opinion anyway.
