Having trouble at job

Postby AprilR » Sun Mar 03, 2019 1:18 pm

I just started working (and failing) as a lawyer and i am Having lots of trouble. Its too Fast paced and requires so much multitasking. I'm Having trouble remembering the 94737 things they tell me to do in five minutes. The other lawyer asked me twice whether i was always so absent minded and he seems distressed because of me. I just lied and Said im a very careful person but i think they can tell that im a slow thinker. I'm very stressed because of this and have been Having nightmares. It's doubly stressful since the other lawyer specializes in labour law and is trying to be considerate. Deep inside ia just want to quit. What do you think i should do?

When you say “just started”, how long is that approximately? Make a list of pros & cons for quitting & for staying. You know yourself & your situation better than anyone, even though it sounds like you’re in an uncertain place right now. Good luck.

if at all possible, try to get them to communicate by e-mail. autistic people are much better at assimilating text, because they can do it in their own time and go over any bits they don't initially understand or have forgotten.

you're probably going to have to level with them about your problems. that might help. equally, it might not. it depends how sympathetic they are. but it's possibly better to find out sooner rather than later, as a long drawn-out crushing failure might prove to be more of a psychological setback than just walking away if things aren't working out for you. i ended up with the former, which is why i'll never work again.
something knocked me out' the trees
now i'm on my knees
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

there is one thing you must be sure of
i can't take any more
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

don't like it but i guess i'm learning

... shock the monkey to life

Well i started last week but so far its one mistake after another. My employer said that im excused after another mistake today. He said he was disappointed in me and he also asked repeated times whether i was always so absentminded.
I can't multitask and my short term memory is poor. I don't handle stress well. If i tell them that it's the same as saying i can't do the job. What makes me so angry is ALL those people stupid enough to expect these things from me. You don't expect a person with down syndrome to be a lawyer. Why are you expecting that from me??
If my employer fires me i'll tell them that i agree with them and my family and others pressured me to work.

Your employer sounds like a real scrotum. :D Don’t let the expectations of others define you. You won’t win any popularity contests, but who wants to be popular with the likes of them? I wish you the best—you’re in a tough spot.

I think he's right though i am really absentminded and have poor short term memory. I think he's trying to not fire me but it must be hard for him too.

You say you are working as a lawyer. Does that mean that you have studied in that field ?

Yes i did but i barely even graduated. Sadly this means everyone around me expect me to know things not taught in school perfectly.

That you graduated with poor short term memory is impressive. You must besides have high abilities.
If they contracted you, certainly they need you. The only thing is to find a way to function together.
It could be interesting for you to ask yourself what you expect from them. What would be a good way to function for you. Then decide if they are able to offer it to you. What kind of work you do better, in which context, do you need quiet place to work etc.
Most important is that you respect yourself.
