Aspergers Relationship Counselling

Postby pentaclequeen » Tue Dec 26, 2017 11:13 pm

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone ever had Aspergers Relationship Counseling in order to learn to communicate with their neutrotypical partner?

I am NT but want relationship counseling to deal with the actions of my partner, who I very much believe has AS (I used to work with people with AS and I see the same patterns).

Has anyone ever had this? What happens?

I am worried that if we go to the wrong therapist and they don't understand AS fully, my boyfriend will just get confirmation of what he thinks now which is that he is normal and I am 'crazy' and then things will never get sorted and I will have to leave.

Thanks,
PQ

The only "relationship" I have had lasted for two weeks. I didn't tell hey about my autism. She dumps me due to the fact I didn't seem interested in her, no holding hand, "not listening" where I was, I was just looking at other things. I wish I told her, as she was and is very cute.

When seeing anybody for help, with any type of autism, you should make sure they have experience, bare in mind that everyone with autism is different. I would phone around to see if they have experience in this field
Diagnosed with Aspergers in 2002
Re-diagnosed with High functioning Autism in 2010.
Re-diagnosed with Medium functioning Autism in 2012.
Diagnosed with dyslexia in 2000
Diagnosed with Dysgraphia in 2000
Diagnosed with Dyspraxia in 2000
Diagnosed with Dyscalculia in 2000

having some relationship counsellor validate your view of reality isn't the answer, because, as you rightly point out, they might not. and even if they did, chances are that he'd think they were wrong as well as you. i'll guess that my prior advice to simply disengage didn't work very well for you. candidly, i do wonder if leaving would actually be the tragedy that you imagine.

If I were you I would contact the autism society. Ask if they know of anyone in your area, who has dealt with aspergers before.

by all means contact NAS, however, does he even recognise that he's autistic? i didn't get the impression that he did. a lot of undiagnosed aspies are very resistant to being labelled in this way. this is quite possibly the fastest way to end your relationship imaginable.
