Hey everyone!

My husband has aspergers. We have nearly 18 month old fraternal twins. Our son displays tons of autistic behavior. His motor skills are extremely well developed and early, but his speech development has stopped, even seems to have decreased. He will soon be formally checked out. But I can't help researching. I was wondering if it's possible for people with aspergers to have a delayed speech development, or if this means he probably has 'Kanner syndrome', or classic autism, rather than aspergers. Are there any aspergers out there who didn't start to speak early or at least 'on track'? I've looked all over Google but I can't find it anywhere. To me it seems like speech development is the only real difference between the two. I myself appear to be on the spectrum too, but both my husband and I started talking early like our daughter. My nephew has Kanner syndrome.
My son had several words a few months ago but now he doesn't anymore. I don't know if he forgot them or lost interest. But he's generally more withdrawn than he was a few months back. Since he was always ahead of schedule with all his milestones I feel like delayed speech development doesn't fit his profile. He even said daddy at 6 months which is really early. What do you think?

It seems you aren't the only one asking this question:
http://www.myaspergerschild.com/2012/01 ... peech.html
As a direct answer: It occurs with about 50% of aspies, most grow out, if not see rest of article. For other possible causes see article. For people telling their story, there is a comment section and this is a site about asperger, so there are a few.
Good luck!

Thanks! I wonder though how a speech therapist could engage him.. I guess they have their tricks for that? I really couldn't find it anywhere but apparently it's quite common. My son will be evaluated in April. Getting him evaluated properly is a step I took to try and let it go, leave it to the professionals because he clearly shows signs but also a lot of contradictions .. My GP thought I was crazy for 'seeing' signs of autism at such a young age. But when I started naming his symptoms he agreed to send me on to a specialist.

Good luck helping him. I'm pretty sure that those people have their tricks. When I was small I had to go to a speech person as well, you will probably get a set of things to do daily, at least I got that.
