Is it possible to get a false positive on Aspergers Tests?

Postby The Unknown » Thu Jan 07, 2016 12:53 pm

All the online tests seem to indicate that I have aspergers. My problem is that I struggle with social cues. I did poorly on the reading the mind in the eyes and similar tests. My EQ is only 39-44 which although in the average range, is below the female average of 47. I got stumped mainly on the questions such as being able to detect how someone's feeling by looking at their faces etc.

Although I personally strongly suspect that I have AvPD with dependent traits, I'm not sure if this and aspergers can co-exist or not. On the big 5 I'm in the 99th percentile for both Neuroticism and Agreeableness, and in the 1st percentile for Extroversion.

Now to the results of the Aspergers online tests.

RAADS-R Total score = 156, all sectors in yellow

AQ = Overall score = 36/AQ-10 = 8 . All sectors in yellow

Your neurodiverse (Aspie) score: 145 of 200
Your neurotypical (non-autistic) score: 69 of 200
You are very likely neurodiverse (Aspie)

On an emotional iq test a few years back when they showed the eiq and percentile rank, I only had a score of about 70 which is in the 2nd percentile.

Could these results really be a false positive?

Thanks.

While I don't really put much stock in online tests at all, it is certainly possible to get both false negatives and false positives, due to the fact that the human brain is complex and stuff in psychology has a lot of overlap. SPD+OCPD looks almost exactly like AS in many ways, for instance - I did a 6 hour psych-evaluation as part of my diagnosis and scored a 22 out of 32 on the Autism test, and screened high on SPD+OCPD. The only reason they realised I actually had AS was because after a year of CBT I still wasn't making any progress whatsoever.

Basically, the distinct difference is that AS is something you are born with, i.e., it manifests in early childhood, whereas compositions with similar behavioural symptoms are often developed during early or late teenage years (around 19 as is the case with personality disorders).

I suggest you contract someone, or multiple someones, that have known you since you were little and ask them if they remember any particular behaviour that you had as a child that persists to this day.

Ok, here's my results:

AQ between 31 and 41 depending on how I interpret the questions.

EQ 22

SQ 60

FQ 71

Eyes in the Mind (looking at the answers) 27

Eyes in the Mind (not looking at the answers) 14

AS you can see AQ and EQ are the anomaly ones here. Whether SQ and FQ could be learned behaviour?

Is it possible to get false results? I certainly think so. Half of them depends on how you interpret the answer. I mean, what is socially unacceptable about preferring to visit a museum compared to the theater? Im sure some people have problems relating to people that are not just aspergers related.

While these tests seem to confirm people who are AS, how many NT people do they pick up as having AS? And what's the difference between being a bit different, quirky and eccentric, and having AS? There's such a fine line. Such a fine line Im absolutely dreading going to my GP and saying "excuse me, I did these tests and..."

Do you plan to push your diagnosis further?

Thanks for the responses. I can't afford therapy at the moment so I'm unable to get a diagnosis of any sort. I already have an official Axis 1 disorder of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Maybe it could be that I have higher than normal Aspie Traits without actually having the disorder.

I didn't even know what AvPD or Aspergers were until I did online tests and scored positive on both disorders and then looked them up to see what they were. The AvPD criteria seems to be a better fit as I have all the traits in varying degrees. The configuration of my MMPI-2 results seem to fit AvPD as an axis-2 disorder more than Aspergers does. The PID-5 also came up positive for AvPD.
