Do I Have Aspergers?

Postby Ezk » Wed Aug 02, 2006 9:10 pm

Hi, I'm a 21 year old male, I have been diagnosed with having Aspergers Syndrome and I'm on 2.5 MG's of Olanzipan (I think that's how it's spelled). My wife thinks I might have something else though, as I'm not sure what I have other than what my psychiatrist says, I was hoping someone could help me. Heres the symptoms I have:
    Mood swings.
    Depression.
Low self image (I don't think much of myself).
    Self harm/abuse.
    Agoriphobia.
    Anxiety.
OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), or just obsessive tendancies to my psychiatrist.
    Anger.
    Paranoia.
    Suicidal tendancies/thoughts.

My psychiatrist writes letters to my Dr. and I got a copy, aparently my risk of suicide and self harm are at a low risk, yet i was scratching my arms until they bled, I havent done it for a while now, but the scars are still visible. I don't know what to think because it doesnt seem like they are doing the job and helping me, can anyone shed some light on this please? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey,

Are you sure that you have told your psychiatrist everything? It's important to be completely open with them. However, even then you are not guaranteed to receive a diagnosis that you are pleased with. You can be assured that it is their honest professional opinion though.

Some of the symptoms you have listed are common for Asperger's sufferers of your age - Especially including Depression, Agoraphobia, Anxiety, and OCD. The others that you have listed are manifestations of these.

How is your speech? ...and what interests have you?

I was sort of unofficially diagnosed with this myself and after doing some research of my own, I am positive that I have no such thing and am personally much more likely to suffer from Avoidant Personality Disorder.

If you're uncomfortable with the diagnosis based on how you match the criteria, I would suggest looking into some other disorders. Clinical depression, the personality disorders, and whatever else you think may be hurting you.

This is all my opinion and I don't want to make it sound professional or anything, but I think a lot of the effects you're suffering from are effects that asperger's sufferers are familiar with, and as such it looks like an easier diagnosis. The problem is that in my case the causes aren't even close. I do suffer social anxiety and depression which are both associated with Asperger's, but it's not due to a mental inability to read and respond to social cues. It's due to fear of rejection and extreme sensitivity. Of course, that's just me and I'm using it as an example. Hopefully you'll be able to find some answers.
