STM, my all time favorite band, great song

Here is one for the cynic in me...backstabbers:

Dogs (Waters, Gilmour) 17:06

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need.
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street,
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed.
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight,
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.

And after a while, you can work on points for style.
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake,
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile.
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to,
So that when they turn their backs on you,
You'll get the chance to put the knife in.

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder.
You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you
get older.
And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south,
Hide your head in the sand,
Just another sad old man,
All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone.

I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused.
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used.
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise.
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this
maze?

Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend.
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And everything's done under the sun,
And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain.
Who was trained not to spit in the fan.
Who was told what to do by the man.
Who was broken by trained personnel.
Who was fitted with collar and chain.
Who was given a pat on the back.
Who was breaking away from the pack.
Who was only a stranger at home.
Who was ground down in the end.
Who was found dead on the phone.
Who was dragged down by the stone.

My husband took me to "the Wall" concert last year, it was incredible!! Way more than just a concert, it was a great production. Truly amazing.

Junip: In every direction

still protecting the magic feather
holding tight to a supporting crutch
writing scripts on worn out leather
still waiting on a divine touch

try to ride on waves of activity
in every direction
you're the center and you're always free
in every direction

feeling safe enough to abandon the void
ban the zero, ban the noise
quiet sounds picked up and dissected
all faint shadows reflected

try to ride on waves of activity
in every direction
you're the center and you're always free
in every direction

A song that's personal to me is "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead.

Code: Select all
That there, that's not me
I go where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

In a little while
I'll be gone
The moment's already passed
Yeah, it's gone

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

Strobe lights and blown speakers
Fireworks and hurricanes

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here....

It's not just the lyrics though. It's the music too. How the vocals swell in and out of waves slightly dissonant background drones and just get enveloped towards the end. It describes how I felt a lot of the time in graduate school. It's an impossible feeling to put into words but the song does it. A feeling of desperately needing to shut out the outside world and escape to a state of nothingness. I also relate the lines "strobe lights and blown speakers, fireworks and hurricanes" to sensory induced anxiety.

Those are good ones guys, I like finding the new songs on this thread. Frostfern, I listened to the Radiohead song on youtube, and I can see what you like about it. It was a little slow for my "taste" but I got a feel for what you meant about the overall feeling of the song, whoever composed it must know what it's like to suffer depression!

Well, we went and say Huey Lewis and the News recently in concert, and so I thought I should post some lyrics by him! Here is one that was written with war veterans in mind, but I always took a different, more personal, meaning out of it.

"Walking On A Thin Line"

Huey Lewis and the News

Sometimes in my bed at night
I curse the dark and I pray for light
And sometimes, the light's no consolation

Blinded by a memory
Afraid of what it might do to me
And the tears and the sweat
Only mock my desperation

Don't you know me
I'm the boy next door
The one you find so easy to ignore

Is that what I was fighting for?

Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Labeled as freaks
Loose on the streets of the city

Walking on a thin line
Angry all the time
Take a look at my face
See what it's doing to me

Taught me how to shoot to kill
A specialist with a deadly skill
A skill I needed to have to be a survivor

It's over now or so they say
Well, sometimes, it don't work out that way
'Cause you're never the same
When you've been under fire, no

Don't you know me
I'm the boy next door
The one you find so easy to ignore
Is that what I was fighting for?

Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Labeled as freaks
Loose on the streets of the city

Walking on a thin line
Angry all the time
Take a look at my face
See what it's done to me

Don't you know me
I'm the boy next door
The one you find so easy to ignore
Is that what I was fighting for, no

Walking on a thin line
Straight off the front line
Labeled as freaks
Loose on the streets of the city

Walking on a thin line
Angry all the time
Take a look at my face
See what it's doing to me

Walking on a thin line
Walking on a thin line
Walking on a thin line.

I don't usually like live recordings, but this one really is an exception.

it was interesting to listen to that stripped of base rhythms. i really love the base rhythms on 'lungs'. but florence has one of those voices that is so expressive. i almost imagine she'd sound good no matter what she sang. and i'm reminded that one of my favourite instruments is the harpsichord and, not too surprisingly, harps do sound very much like harpsichords. but my all time favourite instrument is the organ. organs have such range and vibrancy they're quite simply unbeatable, as far as i'm concerned.
something knocked me out' the trees
now i'm on my knees
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

there is one thing you must be sure of
i can't take any more
... don't you know you're gonna shock the monkey

don't like it but i guess i'm learning

... shock the monkey to life

Currently I am obsessed with this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXDC89tZ4IQ

I can't escape this hell
So many times I've tried
But I'm still caged inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

So what if you can see the darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
(This animal, this animal)

I can't escape myself
(I can't escape myself)
So many times I've lied
(So many times I've lied)
But there's still rage inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself

So what if you can see the darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal

Somebody help me through this nightmare
I can't control myself
Somebody wake me from this nightmare
I can't escape this hell

(This animal, this animal, this animal,
this animal, this animal, this animal, this animal)

So what if you can see the darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal

This animal I have become
