A good sense of humor goes a long way in the classroom. My students are in the 17-20 year old range, and I have to keep their attention and confidence for the whole term. When I make a mistake, the best way to deal with it is to be real about it with a bit of humor. Unlike many of my colleagues, I don't need to hide behind a podium because I look the students in the eye and smile from the start. The best way to teach figurative language is by telling jokes, too. For example, yo momma jokes are good for explaining hyperbole.

The funniest thing I saw this week was a video on tv of a pickup truck rolling over five abortion protesters at the same time. I couldn't stop laughing about it all evening.

You know when you are an imposing, intimidating or popular/polarizing figure in society it makes you less threatening or human in your circles. Your inappropriate or erratic behaviour is accepted because you own it by making fun of yourself. People love me more when I drag myself down to their level. Especially when I exhibit my narcsissitic side with humour, it is more palatable for others and they call it charming. I guess making fun of ourselves shows our humility.

I think there's even more value to it than that.
Being "right" will get you 50% of people, and you'd need to constantly defend that.
Showing a vulnerability that they can relate to and demonstrate how you've overcome it and are on their side gets you their full backup. Shows you as sincere.

The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that you've got it made.

Sometimes.

Definitely. I love when people make fun of me and sometimes it doesn't even matter if it was malicious or not. A good joke is a good joke. I love laughing at myself.

Yeah but it's usually not super intentional. That sounds bad but . . . I don't know when I get happy and out going I get kind of ridiculous. Sometimes the humor is intentional but another part of it is from how "optimistic" and sincere I am. When I was younger especially I used to love to be mean to people as a joke, calling my best friend fatty and such. :)

Sometimes. Irony, certainly.

Little Boy Lost wrote:do you ever make yourself the butt of your own jokes?

I make a lot of self-deprecating comments, but those aren't really jokes...

Little Boy Lost wrote:can you tolerate having someone else tell a joke about you (assuming it is not malicious)?

As long as they're prepared to take what they dish out.

Little Boy Lost wrote: can you play the clown in public and intentionally make a fool out of youself for others' amusement?

I wouldn't say I "play the clown" or amuse others; sometimes I get weird looks if I'm significantly off-normal in public, but that's because idgaf what random strangers think about me. If this is amusing to others, it's not intentional.

Little Boy Lost wrote:I am often amused when things go wrong.

Yeah, me too. (Unless I'm irritated.)

I don't mind not being the center of attention; actually, I prefer it. Attention is exhausting. I mean, I want people to listen when I have something to say but other than that I like to be left alone.

I lol at myself all the time. Probably just as much as at other people/subjects. Handle other's jokes about myself pretty well. Especially if it's a stupid joke or they're trying hard. Don't really be the clown for other's amusement.. it's mostly for my own fun. It's just how I am. I get a little silly sometimes. Just happens to be in public for the most part..

If you can't laugh about yourself, you can't laugh about other stuff imo
