The Most Annoying Thing in the World: Mirroring

Postby crystal_richardson_ » Tue May 22, 2012 8:23 am

k, anyone with good social skills knows that copying the mannerisms of whoever you're speaking with facilitates smooth social interaction and rapport building..........

BUT IT IS SO ANNOYING

I hate when people mirror me. I'm just like BE YOURSELF (in my head) STOP COPYING ME. THAT IS SO INAUTHENTIC

anyone else find mirroring EXTREMELY annoying?

do you even notice that you do it?

(IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT MIRRORING IS HERE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirroring_%28psychology%29)

Anyone who's good at this does it naturally, and it's hard to detect.
It's one of the most common types of "taught" manipulation skills, often hidden in the guise of some rediculous "negotiation skills training" or the like. Anyone who has been "taught" to do this can be seen a mile off and they end up looking like a f*ckwit.

I'm guessing that if this is annoying you then you've been in the company of someone who has been taught to do it and is making themselves look like a tool.

I'm guessing no one has tried to mirror that behaviour of yours.
I'm not arguing; I'm explaining why I'm right.

Jomp....................Everyone mirrors. Follow the link I posted.

I'm saying each and every person I talk to mirrors me. mirrors whatever personality I created. do you find this as well?

the natural mirroring that everyone does?

is it obvious and annoying to you?

I don't find it annoying at all.

One of the benefits of mirroring is it can be used as a tool of manipulation to gain another person's trust. Mirroring can provide a smoke screen affect that makes you appear as though you are similar to the person you are mirroring and thus, lies the deception.

People have accused me of both mirroring and mimicking others and while I admit that I have done it a few times in the past, I don't do it very often.
I'm going to show you how good it feels to be bad

Yes, I was differentiating between those who do it naturally and those who try to force it as a manipulation technique.

I'm saying each and every person I talk to mirrors me. mirrors whatever personality I created. do you find this as well?

I don't know what you're like, but if you're very histrionic in your behaviour it might be a way of mocking you. If you are creating different personalities then I would imagine it would be noticable to people and they would do it to highlight this.

is it obvious and annoying to you?

No, it has no effect on me at all.

I've used it as a manipulation technique very successfully in the past. It works well for me because I know how to psychoanalyze people as well. I have no doubt that I could manipulate someone into committing suicide.
