Try watching the Vikings. Religion and Norse gods play a big role in this show.

The Darkening Age
Book by Catherine Nixey
Is what I am currently reading. I always wonder how far we would be if the destruction of the classical world had not happened.
One of the most fascinating things regarding the Germanic people is the transformation of the names of deities that have been turned into every day words. Odin probably one if my favourites giving us wondering and wanderlust and Wednesday to name a few. It excites me. Especially considering how much the Norse believed in the power of words.

I thought this was really well done. Being the dramatised true story helped.
I'm not arguing; I'm explaining why I'm right.

Vikings and Rome are both excellent period-piece series

I'd say just go straight to the Poetic/Prose Edda. Anthony Faulkes has a good translation of the latter.
Vikings is fun. There seems so be a lack of good shows lately. GoT was disappointing. Can't remember the last one I thoroughly enjoyed.
