This is true. But by telling others to be less selfish, and them acting accordingly, in turn produces a world that benefits everyone.
In other words, if everyone acted less selfishly, then everyone would benefit.
While acting selfishly may benefit you in the short term, it leads to the breakdown of those foundations which really benefited or could benefit you more.
So it is ultimately in everyone's interest to act not selfishly.

I meant that it's taken for granted that we are not responsible to improve.
I agree with you that people do suck. What I was attacking where the motivations or implications of that statement; it serves to absolve the person of responsibility to improve, either themselves or their world.
