In a sense, you do, because you identify with it. Quite an emotional thing to do as well, btw.

For example, my cousin claims she has fibromygalgia: she chose to be that way, because she keeps talking about it. It is part of her identity. Some might have it, but choose to be something else then their disease. Most people do. So while she will still suffer, she makes it bigger by using it as the central point of her life.

At a basic level, you are the way you are, but it is only an oddity. At some point though, some people choose some oddity over the others, and then it becomes a choice. It becomes their persona, how they relate to the world, and that is always a choice.

Oh ok, I see what you mean. You're talking about building an identity on some element of our personality. In a way it's true, I build my identity upon my sexuality and my PD and some other stuff, but it's not as emotional or defensive as you seem to think. I'm bringing up the sexuality thing in this thread just for the sake of debate, it's not that I get riled up about it or anything.

I think it is more accurate to say that we identify with the wound and that becomes the PD. so we don't identify with the PD per se but what caused it, or our past and experiences and what characterized them.

How about when there's no abuse? ie. genetics.

hmm I was talking about a different identificatory process in my post before yours I just realized...

what Oneringer is talking about is identification with a disease after you've been labelled as having it. I (I now realize) was referring to the process of identification involved in the genesis of the disease itself prior to being labelled.

but to answer your question: in the case of genetics, there would still be an identification process involved in the genesis of your sense of self/personality based on gene-environment interactions I think, where your genetics influence your effect on your environment which loops back to influence your sense of self/personality development.

like maybe you are genetically impulsive/reduced fear > you get into trouble with the law a lot as a result > subsequently get labelled a deviant > develop a deviant sense of sense in response > identify with deviant others entrenching your deviant sense of self > resulting in antisocial personality disorder

@Crystal

I see, that does make sense. As I said, I do think homosexuality, psychopathy and a few other things have great impact in how I develop a sense of self. So how does that apply to you?
