Formori,

In New Zealand Medical Insurance is optional and you basically get the insurance if you desire private hospital care and to avoid waiting lists (and if you are wealthy enough to pay the premiums).

We basically have a free health care system - and probably higher taxes. Dr's visits are heavily subsidised for those on lower incomes. It is Ok and feasible to stay at home with children. Solo parents are encouraged to seek work/study when all children are school aged. This is what I did as I divorced my kids Dad went on welfare and the welfare system paid for all my study expenses. I now work and am off welfare but receive subsidies for housing and child raising expenses.

All kinds of people and extended family raise children and I reckon we are all treated and accepted about the same. A male raising children would probably receive even more assistance and support as it is somewhat rarer and males are valued for their input into child raising.

I am a Catholic. I do believe in the family unit as being a good choice for child rearing but ONLY when it is actually working well enough that all involved have a good quality of life.

My ex would in many ways make a very good Dad. He would be deeply involved, affectionate and loving but on the other hand he may also act out in front of the child and the child would be left feeling, I imagine, very insecure. The child would not be able to learn from him how to handle its negative emotions.

Plus I do not feel that he meets the required financial security to be able to consistantly provide although he is getting there. And there is also the question of how the child might feel when older about let downs, broken promises and being lied to.

He wants to give it a go. I don't think a child should be a guinea pig. (You may say hamster) Anyway an experiment.

im a 24 yr old male and am currently in in-patient psychotherapy and have been diagnosed with the following.

personalty disorder not otherwise specifiied with anti-social and narcoleptic tendencies. Passive suicidal tendencies. ADHD, Insomnia, and i some major impulsivity and passive aggressive behaviors.

let me tell you that my life is miserable. i fear what i might do to myself and others. honestly, i am in one of the best treatment centers in the world for my issues and if I am not able to find ways to deal with my issues now, then I see myself suiciding within a few weeks of leaving here.

i would trade anything in the world to feel emotions. i live this shady empty, miserable , sadistic, life every day and i hate it.

24 year old in treatment centre.

DON"T give up. My partner was in a very similar way at times of his life. He is now nearly 34 and if he were here right now would definately tell you that his life is now worth living. You may and will go through more crap, you may still hurt others and miss out on what you want. We are all on our own journey.

I myself have lived through an abusive childhood, sexual abuse from various males of various ages. I have three children, am divorced from their father, my brother raped my sister when she was 16 and he 18.

I will finish this later my lids just got home.

Sorry.

Thriver,
I just wanted to say I found your information on the New Zealand medical system fascinating. It certainly seems better than here.
