Left or Right Handed?

Postby justonemoreperson » Fri Nov 08, 2019 10:37 pm

Just wondering whether you think this has any effect on a person's personality.

I'm very much right-handed. My left hand is limited to some fairly menial tasks, whereas my right hand does all the cool stuff.

Left hand: Half the guitar thing, holding my watch, gear lever, motorbike clutch, typing (not allowed near the mouse), helping the right hand, takes the prime spot only when eating crisps.

Oddly, the word 'sinister' comes from left-handed.
I'm not arguing; I'm explaining why I'm right.

I'm ambi-. A neurologist asked me what hand is dominant and I explained which I use for what and he decided I'm ambidextrous so I go with that now.

My preferred foot is the left and I mention it because hand preferences get a little more tricky. If I had to choose one probably my left side is better equipped

I write with my right hand. I play pool and snooker right-handed. Obviously rifles are shot right-handed (else cock the sa-80 in my face), I draw with my right hand, play pingpong with my right hand, cut with scissors with my left hand, prefer a southpaw boxing stance and find my left hand is preferred for swinging punches, prefer to throw and catch with my left hand, I tug with my left hand, I am ambivalent about which hand I use to throw a dart which makes approaching the oche a little bit of a dilemma as I'm not sure what'll feel most comfortable at the time. I prefer to hold a knife in my left hand. Also a lefty-crisp-eater. The mouse of a computer or touchpad belongs to my right hand. Smokes get passed from hand-to-hand depending on what I'm doing

In general, I think I just learned to use whatever hand the task was first done with and stuck with it.

Right.

My kid use both hands. At a point when he shouldn't.
He is not as skilled with arts, as we are. But he is skilled with maths and foreing language.

lefty
southy
goofy

adults used to tell me that left handed children killed their right handed counterparts in the womb

i have never had a left handed teacher or supervisor. i have one person who is "sometimes" management but they do not enjoy it. the others i have met are either heavily into sports, art or self employed. i know two that have different car washes and one who walks dogs for a living

Have you ever tried to be right-handed?

I've often wondered if I could teach my left hand to hold a pen, for example, but always get too bored to stick at it.

I wonder if you force your other hand to be less useless, would it influence your personality and skills.

i can fight orthodox but cannot steer with my right at all so i think it is more a case of worst foot forward

i taught myself to write a little with my right hand at school because left smudges and holding the pen for long periods is sore, but it looks like baby writing and it is slow and useless.

I tried to learn to shoot with my left hand, but it seems pointless. It just doesn't feel right, no matter how hard I try.

i think a lot of it is conditioning though. It can be done but it would take a lot of re-learning. I found this out when I tried to use toe-brakes on a plane. My left foot hammered itself flat to the floor and the plane kept skidding to the left, because my left foot was used to banging the clutch down in a car, whereas my right foot was more sensitive to the accelerator.

It can get better, but it takes a lot of time. If I thought it would genuinely open up more possibilities for me I might be willing to give it more of an effort to try to get my left side working better.

I'm right-handed. Because of playing piano and games I know how to use my left hand, I just never do it because it feels unnatural.

One time I was stoned and learned that both Justin Bieber and Obama and a bunch of other U.S. presidents were left-handed and I spent about an hour being fascinated about it and being suspicious how I couldn't find any research on the subject. I know a few left-handed people irl and I don't notice a pattern.

it is mostly muscle memory and physio-compensation, that is, the body will find the easiest way to do it, based on what it can already do

quick draw is a very isolated movement, whereas grave digging, for example, requires full body.
when i started shooting in occulus quest, i have near equal accuracy with both hands because i did not need to compensate for the weeight of the gun, i simply needd a decent trigger fingerr with reasonable aim, which any gamer will have. contrarily, i cannot attack zombies efficiently with a pitchfork if i use my right hand, because i lose reach and accuracy because most of my actions start in a goofy stance
