Music and personality

Postby solemnlysworn » Thu Oct 17, 2019 4:35 pm

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18608148

A small amount of research has been done on musical preferences and personality, with some kinds of music being linked to antisocial behaviour. The argument is usually that music can sometimes cause antisocial behaviours, through rap, metal, violent lyrics etc, especially in adolescents (similar arguments are made for other media such as video games). I don't know if this can be stated with any certainty since there's a causation/correlation issue so that we don't know whether the personality causes an interest in certain kinds of music or that exposure to certain kinds of music is formative in personality development.

What kinds of music have you been most interested in throughout you life? Has it changed since you were younger? Do you think that your taste in music is indicative of your personality in any meaningful way?

I don't enjoy music that much tbh but for some reason I know when something is aesthetic. Knowing isn't the same as enjoying though if that makes sense.

When I do listen to music I don't have any particular genre. I listen to pretty much whatever is around.

There are some tunes that go well while holding hands with Lucy, some while baking, but because I enjoy making bowls and eating mint icecream, that makes me sweet?

Although I'm such a tight a$$ I'd probably go for a cheaper whiskey if mixing with icecream

Try Bailey's as well. But the Whiskey has a nicer kick to it.

i grew up liking 90s pop rock and rap, then got into classic rock from my dad, then grunge/alternative on my own.

i like a lot of mainstream music prior to the past five years. these past five years I can't get into it any more. most the 90s - 2010 I like has some sort of nostalgic aspect.

lyrically I like brutal lyrics. aside from the mainstream narcissistic garbage I posted last night which was just a diarrhea of music that I really wanted to get reactions out of, and did, I like brutal lyrics like the song I sang in vocaroosies.

i like such a mix depends on my mood. my personality has many modes. i rarely listen to the same genre day to day.

Depends on my MOod. Usually something upbeat, preferably with many details and thought-provoking lyrics. Sometimes feeling down requires something gloomy and sometimes a counterbalance to something very very upbeat.
Some songs fill my head and tickling squirm their way everywhere. Others remain more superficial. Some songs make me wanna dance on a street.

What kinds of music have you been most interested in throughout you life?

For workouts I like hard rock /rap usually which nowadays is combined with orchestral/ classical. Can't get into pure classical music however apart from one or two. Although I can admire the talent and genius behind a lot of compositions. I would say overall it is my least favourite.
Has it changed since you were younger?

Yes. I am tending more towards indie, and funky country & western, and listen to it more than I used to. I become thrilled when I discover amazing music I never knew existed .
Do you think that your taste in music is indicative of your personality in any meaningful way?

I can't analyse it, but I do think I have sh1t hot taste in music and can pick the best from every genre. I stupidly become disappointed to learn it can be a defining difference between two otherwise like-minded people. I can be really critical of other people's taste in music. HATE soppy songs sung by men and hate shrill voices in women, both of which I am stuck with at work through having to listen to the worst fking radio station on earth. That combined with heating at work makes me really bad tempered most of the time.
Overall music is important to me and is the one artistic endeavour that can make me admire and feel in awe of the human species.
