Forgetting What's Obvious

Postby cinnamoncookie » Thu Oct 10, 2019 10:13 pm

Lately I've noticed a lot of things I used to dismiss as useless as they've not worked for me in the past, work. A really clear example would be taking medication regularly. I don't think it's abnormal to be unable to tell minor differences in the state of your mental health. Problem arises when they add up and solutions to any of them would make a significant difference. A healthy diet, enough exercise and sleep, medication if you need it, and so on.

Mainly I'm making this thread because I want to know how many other people experience the same. And to remind people I guess.

I'll dismiss a lot of things my psychologist says such as whether I'm drinking or not, or whether I'm taking my medication like I'm supposed to, because there's always some bigger more abstract problem I think is more important but can't put in a format that makes it clear what kind of solution it requires. Maybe at some point this was a useful or "true" way to handle things but now it's not anymore and it's become an excuse not to put effort into anything.

I've been exercising some more, taking my medication regularly and drink maybe once or twice a month and I've noticed a huge difference in my general mood. This doesn't mean I don't still have mental health problems but I'm not on the verge of doing harm all the time which I consider an improvement.

What are your experiences? What are you experiencing now, do you actually feel like you're living in the present? When's the last time you've tried making small changes, how did it work out for you?

do you actually feel like you're living in the present?

Where else could you possibly be?

My experiences are the same as yours it’s a bunch of minor things all added up together. For me exercising and regular sex has more of an effect on my mood than anything else, diet is huge, I’ve been off meds for awhile and I can’t tell any difference in how I feel but I’ve had a few more ‘episodes’ drinking has a big negative effect on my mental state. I probably need meds but it is in direct conflict with my job so it’s a song and a dance.

It's easy to dismiss the advice that feels like a platitude, like in 'eat, sleep, exercise', and I do forget just how much they make a difference until I've neglected an aspect for a long time and then implement healthier habits again. I also tend to downplay the effect socialisation has on me and generally anything that forces me out of my head

Yeah I totally forgot about that one. Not sure if you meant it that way but, I do way better when I go out regularly and hang out with people that don't overthink things as much as I do. But when I'm feeling bad basically I feel like doing the complete opposite and barricade myself in my apartment.

I think in my case because I don't share in the warm fuzzy belonging phenomenon that people get after spending time together and getting attached I used to confuse that for 'not needing people' but even at my worst in my late teens I was going out a few times a week and getting hammered thinking it was just to get buzzed but I could have done that in my house by myself.

There's something I like about it and that's good for me but I'm not sure how to pinpoint it.
