I force myself to be honest here. I write a reply and then re-read it with my bollocks detector switched on and fix anything that's untrue.

That's a partial lie LMAO

Some of your bs is truly glorious.

It's open to the mind set that interprets it. Which can lead to some very amusing outcomes.
But you are well aware of that.

We thrive on being lied to, which is why Hollywood exists, but as soon as it's done "live" it's a problem somehow.

I catch myself doing this, I would keep the story the same but change the way it came across or sounded depending on the impression I was trying to get across. I’ve found from experience that sometimes this is a good skill set to have but usually it’s more effort than it’s worth and it’s easier just to mindlessly blurt our events as they happened and let people interpret them the way they want. Manage their interpretations of the events, that describes it well I would say. Like tell them what happened just in a way that favors my perspective or causes them to lean in that direction

Everyone lies.

There's not a person on this forum who doesn't lie to an extent; either by exaggeration, missing out certain aspects of themselves, leading people to conclusions etc. and, if they don't think they do, then they're lying to themselves.

Everyone does it, online or off. Women's makeup is a lie, facebook is a lie, every conversation we have with anyone is a lie to an extent.

People don't mind lying, as long as it doesn't make them look stupid.

To a greater or lesser degree. Some wouldn't know the truth it if slapped them in the face as a result of their own penchant for being utter dullards with their own lies.

Real Lies, White Lies and Gray Lies:Towards a Typology of Deception

The breakdown on pgs 30-31 is interesting.

People don't mind lying, as long as it doesn't make them look stupid.

Are you referring to the liar or the one being duped?

Those who are duped, although I guess it applies to both.

Truth and lies aside, people will always try to believe something that makes them feel better about themselves and resist something that doesn't, even in the face of reason.

It makes the whole fixation on truth pretty much irrelevant.

It does, does it?
Depends who the audience is. What's been staked, errr...at stake, that sort of thing.

Nice play there, and most likely quite true.
Good thing science doesn't rely on the irrelevance of the truth aka data.
Because if it did, sh!t would really hit the fan and I doubt we'd be having this conversation but be back in the horse and buggy days.

This thread isn't discussing empirical fact, it's talking about human interaction, which includes very little fact.

Truth in raw science = empirical fact
Truth in human interaction = what we choose, or have been taught, to believe
