I'm pretty sure Siegfried meant music sad by itself. Either explicitly by it's lyrics or slow pacing, sometimes monotonous tune.

"Sad" music is songs played in with minor chords.
"Happy" is those with major chords.
That's what makes blues and rock interesting. They play major and minor together.
I get bored or depressed when something isn't right, stagnant or when I've set my standards too high. Small little joys and curiosities help me out of it. Everybody different though. Some people need more to get them out.
