Why would I spend $50 of my last $200 on a Greyhound bus to a shelter in another city? That money has to feed me all month.

I did walk 50 km between 2 cities when I was hitching once. Nobody wanted to pick me up. I wouldn't recommend it.

As far as i know I've never met or been offended by a rapist, whereas i do have a vagina myself so i wouldn't say i find either things offensive.
Rape itself is an offence, so a rapist is offensive to the raped - but might be thoroughly inoffensive to everyone else.
Vaginas are inoffensive organs, same as willies or any other part of the anatomy - as long as you don't commit an offence with them.

You don't need to tell me that. I've been hitchhiking throughout my late teens / twenties to early 30s, to save money. Also walked, 50 kms more than once.
Throughout all my hitchhiking years I could count on one hand the occasions when the motorist inquired about the possibility of sex, in a polite and roundabout way. Which i firmly and politely declined, they profusely apologized for the insinuation, we continued the conversation about politics / weather / literature / whatever it was previously, they dropped me at the destination and that was it. They were without exception 30/40+ "white-collar" types. The honest ordinary "working-class" type male drivers were rather mortified by the whole idea of hitchhiking, said they'd never allow their kids doing that.
At least half of the drivers giving me a lift were women.
Might've been a different time/place (i'm a few years older than you), but i never felt the need to take such drastic pre-emptive measures as shoving whatever meagre cash i carried up the hole.
Where i live now hitchhiking is pretty commonplace, it's either car-less locals going from village A to B, or continental backpackers covering longer distances. I usually give them a lift whenever i can.
It is (and always been) usually the motorists who fear getting mugged / raped / killed / getting fleas by the hitchhikers, not the other way around. That's why many of them don't like to give people a lift.

How does 'the city' know that you're poor? I'm not any richer than you (having perhaps less debt is still debt = poor), yet more often than not i'm mistaken for the 'idle rich' and treated accordingly. (The 'idle' part is correct though ). Nobody except a very few close people know my actual financial status. I can get out & about in the murkiest ghetto and the most upscale establishments in the same clothing/demeanour, without raising an eyebrow of suspicion in either.
