Scenario: Joe is good at his job in sales. But the work is fast-paced and stressful. Often he is up late or getting up early to "get ahead" at work. He is missing meals and is sleep deprived. Joe suddenly feels terrible, slow, lethargic, not feeling able to work. He goes to the doctor for advice. The doctor suggests he is depressed and prescribes an antidepressant. Joe thinks "that makes sense" and dutifully takes the drug. He starts to feel better and becomes more productive at work.
Joe has been taking the antidepressant for 18 months now. Suddenly Joe goes through emotional crisis at work. The stress just becomes too much and he virtually breaks down. It is recommended he check himself into a hospital. While in the psyche ward, a psychiatrist diagnoses him with bipolar. They prescribe meds accordingly. Joe is released and returns to work on a five drug cocktail. Over the next 18 months Joe is hospitalized 6 times for "episodes." Proving his diagnoses.
Epilogue: So in the space of 3 years, Joe went from feeling low in energy to multiple hospitalizations for mental illness and purported bipolar. This is happening all too frequently. We need to question what is going on here.
