The Psychiatric Survivor/Ex-Patient Movement

Postby TruthSpeak » Tue Jan 10, 2012 9:48 pm

The Psychiatric survivors movement is a loose coalition of people who, united by the resentment that they have been harmed or betrayed by psychiatry, advocate in favor of mental health treatment alternatives, or just the right to freedom from the system, for those diagnosed with (or simply accused of being afflicted by) mental illnesses. The wider movement is also known as the Consumer/Survivor/Ex-Patient Movement.

There are no dues or fees for membership, you are a member simply when you say you are.

Coerced and/or forced psychiatric interventions are a violation of a person's basic human rights; including the right to autonomy, the freedom to make one's own choices, the right to liberty and security of the person, the right to physical and mental integrity, freedom from torture, the right to health care on the basis of free and informed consent, etc. Many people who have experienced forced institutionalization, forced drugging and forced electroshock respond with outrage because of a prejudice within society that ignores their human rights and over-rates the judgment of psychiatrists, pharmaceutical companies, the police, and the legal oversight of the mental health system.

Much "treatment" In the name of "help" is coercive and rather violent in nature.

I was a victim of this after psychiatric drugs made me sick.

The psychiatric survivors movement grows from these experiences.

"Help" is often a cover for violence. It attracts people looking for easy targets.

The movement also has room for those who have benefited from Psychiatry but are appalled by its arrogance.

Psychiatry is doing more harm than good. The long-term outcome for patients diagnosed with serious mental illnesses was better 50 years ago. The outcome in 3rd world countries is better than in the developed world. The only explanation is the deleterious drugs that are used. (This also explains the recent surge of bipolar diagnoses. How on earth could a genetic illness increase dramatically in the last decade? It's the result of antidepressants being thrown around like jelly beans.)

Ample evidence for the above claims (and many others) can be found in Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America http://www.amazon.com/Anatomy-Epidemic-Bullets-Psychiatric-Astonishing/dp/0307452425/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326961092&sr=8-1 Double-check all of his references and the studies he cites. Then ask yourself: "Why haven't I heard this?"

Because billions of dollars and tens of thousands of careers are at stake. Because the most vocal critics of Psychiatry are Scientologists, so anyone making similar claims is deemed a nutjob.

I post this as someone who's life was saved by Psychiatry. That doesn't mean they know what they're doing, that my meds "are just like the insulin a diabetic takes," that whatever is "wrong" with my brain is caused by a "chemical imbalance" certain drugs have been specifically designed and proven to treat, that children should be put on antipsychotics.

Psychiatry is one part alchemy, two parts hubris, and one part luck. Take a look at different volumes of the DSM. How do disorders multiply? (106 in volume I, 365 by volume IV!) Yet the media and legal system treat its pronouncements like divinely inspired revelations. Where the hell are the skeptics?

Great !

This forum name "Anti-psych" is kind of misleading ? I made this thread so if people web searched the P.S.M they would find this forum and its writings and links, its a 1st page result last time I looked. Any way the term anti-psychotic is misleading also, often just makes psychotic zombies !

Mabey the anti-abuse/pro informed consent forum as a name for this section ? or survivor support forum ? My PTSD from that abusive hospital stay... every symptom of PTSD, its starting to fade a little.

TeenScreen is a very controversial so-called "diagnostic psychiatric service", aka suicide survey; done on children who are then referred to psychiatric "treatment". The evidence suggests that the objective of the psychiatrists who designed TeenScreen is to place children so selected on psychotropic drugs. http://www.psychsearch.net/teenscreen.html
