As having been a patient at a certain Hospital and a patient at two other hospitals, I’ve had my share of experiences to judge different hospitals. This particular hospital I feel has a lot of room for improvement. Yes there are caring and kind staff who have your best interest in mind, and want you to be mentally healthy, but the majority I found were young and still inexperienced in life and more interested in their coworkers and gossiping, then the care of the patients. The rooms also had A/C blasting in right over the beds and this was late september which made it really cold. But the #1 complaint is there is not enough to do. Little therapy and groups and lots of sitting, pacing and sleeping going on.
Creative self-expression in the form of art therapy, music therapy, movement therapy, I believe would be most beneficial to patients. They could “get it all out” let their frustrations and “demons” out in constructive outlets. Television should be uplifting, inspiring, or at least educational. Books, magazines, newspapers, shouldn’t be tabloid stuff, but inspiring, hopeful, uplifting material. And the C.D’s they give you for listening on the headphones, should not include ganster rap with foul lyrics and negative messages. I see mental institutions need to step up to the plate and realize the most important thing their patients need, even before the medicine is love.
