Psych Hospital Abuse Storys

On April 18, 2013 a woman was taken to Restpadd Psychiatric Inc, 2750 Eureka Way Redding, Ca. and admitted. When she arrived she was heavily medicated, disoriented, and tried to leave the facility. Staff tried to subdue her using undue force causing several lacerations, a cracked rib and severe bruising. A witness that had gone with her was standing outside of a locked glass door and saw 3 employees knock the woman to the floor, kicking, punching and scratching her. The woman managed to reach a phone and call for help. When she was taken to the emergency room a police officer from Redding, Ca was called. The officer stated that even tho the woman had a cracked rib, a bruise the shape of a fist in the center of her chest and a bruise in the shape of a boot imprint on her the left side of her stomach that he felt her injuries "were not that serious" The officers supervisor was called by a concerned party and the officer returned to the hospital to take photos of the injuries. There is a video of the attack yet law enforcement says they do not have the legal right to view the video without the facilities consent.
This was a 5'6" woman that weighs 125 lb there was no reason for 3 employees to "restrain" her by knocking her to the floor, kicking, punching and scratching her.
This facility is supposed to be a safe place where mentally ill people go to get help, not abused. Law enforcement is supposed to investigate abuse allegations, not dismiss them as not that serious. How can law enforcement ignore a boot shaped bruise on a persons stomach that can only be caused one of two ways? Either the woman was dropped kicked in the stomach or she was knocked to the ground and stomped on. How can they explain a fist shaped bruise in the center of her chest? The only way for that to happen is for her to be struck with a closed fist with enough force to leave the imprint.

I lived the psychiatric nightmare myself after I had panic attacks from a psych med side effect and went to the E.R , I needed to go outside for air... and was assaulted.

Before the age of the Internet consumers had to contend with sending complaint letters to businesses and the national Better Business Bureau. But unless the media picked up a complaint, it might usually go unheard about by other consumers.

These days however, its different.

Worst are : handcuffed to the floor
being cut off of high doses of valium cold
being threatened by a lawyer for permanent institutionalization for one too many suicide attempts and then it was denied that it happened when I asked the psych nurses about it later

Of course the valium Benzo withdrawals from hell are labelled as bipolar mania or Schizoaffective disorder by the incompetents in these places and the Haldol and other drugs from hell come your way, I lived it.

I wrote about this on another anti-psych forum. Neither of the places are UHS hospitals. Thanks for sharing the consumer complaint sites. I don't usually file reports, but I'm considering doing it this time. I'm alright now but I still sometimes think about all three events especially the lawyer threat.

Hi, I'm new here. I was drawn here by a post about anhedonia due to antipsychotics. It's something I've been dealing with a lot recently.

Anyway, I've had some horrific things happen to me while locked up, too. The worst of it was in 2008; I was in the state hospital for the second time. The first time was hell, but the comraderie (however you spell that) with other patients made it bearable. The second time was much worse.

Actually, it's kind of embarassing why it was so much worse. I think the reason was that I became compliant, surrendering myself. They'd inject me with risperdal and I just let them do it. They ****ed up my meds numerous times, leaving me thinking worms were in my brain. Then, there were all these ****ing ridiculous activities. I was in there for Halloween and they were having this costume party. I didn't want to dress up like a little kid would, but somehow they talked me into it. Luckily, I escaped being in their "Thanksgiving show." I felt it was making a mockery out of these people. They were adults. Must've been humiliating for them.
The things that stand out in my mind, though, startled me. I will never forget the woman trying to be positive like all their bull**** groups told her to. She was straining so hard to think "right." After awhile she confided in me saying she was praying for death. Why couldn't the doctors just talk to her about that and offer support? Instead, she needed (according to them) to think "positively."
Another patient wanted to *stay* in the hospital rather than go to a secure group home (the one where they lock you in). I couldn't understand how anyone would want that. He must have really suffered on the outside.
I was very rebellious in my prior hospitalizations. I threw chairs at windows and fought the orderlies when they wanted to shoot me full of drugs. I tried to escape many times. I remember being handcuffed and dragged along by this leather belt to see a lawyer about my commitment hearing - out in public like that. It was humiliating. The point of all this is that I had a better time during those hospitalizations than the one where I was compliant. I had no dignity being docile, and I'm still fighting to restore it.
Taking someone's dignity away is, in my experience, a form of abuse. There's no reward for being "good." You get punished with meds the same as anyone else. Now there seems to be a movement going questioning medication and psychiatry. That is a hopeful sign to me. No more ****ing slave/master style psychiatry, please!
